Question about 1998 Ford Contour

1 Answer

I am not mechanically inclined so if I get an answer, keep that in mind. My 1998 Contour keeps jerking and shifting when I reach about 55 mph. I noticed the fan is not moving unless I turn the air on and then it moves but it will still do it with the air on. Can this be the problem?

Your vehicle jerking may be as simple as a dirty air filter that needs to be replaced. But a more serious problem would be a fuel pump defect, or the fuel injection system.
Now you didn't mention if you were driving a manual or automatic. So in the case of your car shifting, if its a manual it could be a misaligned transmission or something is loose in the clutch housing. But if your vehicle is an automatic you should check the transmission fluid (you do this while the car is running).

Sorry, I should have told you it was an automatic and I have already checked the fluid and it is ok. I checked the air filter and it was ok also. Maybe I should be more specific in what it is doing....I can drive about 5-6 miles at 55 mph and all of a sudden it will "slam" real hard and stick in that gear and then finally switch. I will then have to pull over, put car in park, and drive for a little while until it does it again. (My fan will not come on either unless A/C is on)

To start simple, have your tires rotated and balanced. Next, have someone mechanically inclined check your CV joints and wheel bearings. Sometimes this can be caused by transmission problems. But start simple-- it is cheaper.

When im driving my 2000 ford contour 2.5 se after drining 15 minutes about on 55 and 65 mph the car starts jerking and rpm goes up and down and when i drive slow and stop the car rpm goes back to normal.

You might have a bad throttle position sensor that's going bad.You didn't say if you had a check engine light that's on or not.If there is then I would recommend that you have your local auto parts store retrieve the codes and and that will give you a better idea as to what the problem could be.Without actually being able to completely inspect all the necessary systems I would only be making a guess according the information that you provided to me.It sounds like a bad throttle position sensor

99 dodge ram that jerks between 40 and 50 mph

Bring it back to the transmission shop and have them test drive it with the scanner to see if the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) needs to be replaced. A worn TPS will case the transmission to have shifting problems, the TPE sends voltage signals to the PCM and will control the transmission shift points and firmness. If the TPS has a flat spot and the voltage is down at the point where the transmission needs to shift, there may be a conflict of shift program and needs to be addressed. Good luck and keep me posted.
