Actually the conector you are looking for is on the side of the transmission aand is called speed sensor you have me little cofuse with the speedo, any way next time you ask for something make sure to include the engine size since this car come with 2 diferent negines and also one is hatch back and the other budy stile not. also alwys say if it is manual or automatic transmission that way will be easer ti help you.
i had to keep looking at manuals for both engines and budy stile

check the wiring/connector to the speed sensor on the gearbox if ok change the sensor its more than likeley at fault i am sure at that year it is not a mechanical /cable drive. same system as rover 200 that year sensor common prob, but it could be the speedo head but very rarely hope this helps.

I have a Nissan Serena 2003 model with CVT gearbox. It wount engage 1,2 when moving in low speed, or uphill.when behaving this way, its fails to reverse,or reverse in difficulty.

Have the codes read at Autozone. Check out the wiring to the speed sensor on the output shaft of the gearbox. Be prepared to change the speed sensor itself. Is the speedo functioning? Often when the speed sensor is faulty the speedo dial fails

Do you mean by the speedo head the VSS or vehicle speed sensor that is on the tail shaft end of the gearbox with two wires coming out of a connector and which sends an electronic signal to the instrument cluster which displays a reading onthe speedo?

I have a 1996 Toyota Ipsum, the speedometer and rev counter sometimes run wild and it disenganges gears. What can I do to fix the problem of the speed sensor?

Sounds very much like a problem I have experienced on and off for a couple of years. If your rev and speedo gauges drop dead, your o/d light flashes and your auto gearbox doesn't like to change through the gears, then the odometer pcb has a failed chip. You can pull it apart and try to resolder the loose chip back on. But be warned this is very delicate job (more suited for repair shop) you could end up flooding other chips with solder (as i did). It can be changed out with one from the wreckers but will have to be re-set to your ks/milage. One solution at this stage, if re-soldering is your option, you can also swap your eeprom chip from your old odometer pcb to your new/used pcb from the wreckers. This eeprom carries all the historical ks/milage used. See some info on tachosoft.com (eeprom info) and info from toyota forums on speedo/rev gauges (pcb failure) In a nut shell, this pcb odometer problem kills the feed back signal back to the o/d and gearbox speed sensors etc and so the gearbox doesn't know when to change through the gears.

Peugeot 406 1996 (p reg) speedo working intermitantly

Most likely to be the Bitron speedo interface behind the glove box, I replaced all the diodes, capacitors and both chips on mine (electronic expert), though you could have dry joints on the back of the dash or the road speed sensor on the back of the gearbox.
