The vehicle seems to be in limp-home mode. Only giving minimal power to components so you are not stranded on the side of the road - and to prevent further damage.

There could be a wide array of problems that can cause this.

You should stop at an auto parts store chain - like AutoZone, Advance Autoparts etc. to have the OBD codes read for free. They should be able to translate the code for you.

If not - or you want a second opinion - re-post the actual code(s) they pull up and re-post them here.

They should be in the format P0XXXX

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating and POSITIVE TESTIMONIAL is appreciated for answering your FREE question.

The reason your vehicle is running poorly is that it is in LIMP mode. When the ECM detects a fault it gives you the Check Engine light and switches to limp mode to allow you to get to a service station to get it repaired. As far as what is wrong, you will need to check the Fluid levels and if those are good take the vehicle to Auto Zone or another Parts store that will use their code reader to identify the fault codes for you. The code reader will tell you what the fault is and you can get the parts to make the repair while you are there.

So the first thing to do is get the computer scanned for trouble codes. The codes will help direct someone to the area to test.
Most auto parts stores will scan for free in hopes of selling you some parts.

Maybe air filter? Low air could cause the o2 sensors to send a code, maybe get the code checked at Autozone, and start there. Maybe Cat Convertor... water in gas, I could guess all night......

Possibly the clunking noise may be your control arm bushings being bad. As for the check engine light, get the code read and go from there.

is the engine running? If so are you putting the strobe light HT pickup on the right lead. If you are on lead no1, try putting sensor on no4. Should find it lines up. If engine not running, swap the actual Ht leads around. 1-4, and 2-3

I have a 2002 grand am and less than a year ago had to replace cadalitic converter. The check engine light would come on once in awhile, and the car will start to bogg down. It started out as intermitent then eventually all the time. The smell may be the heating up of the converter.
