Gday im a mechanic i have owned two of these in a lite ace and a tarago there are three possitions that the cam shaft can be aligned and not have valve piston contact the middle one is the right one the two ither side of the correct one cant breath properly smokes badly ,idels rough and extreem lack of power and excessive noise (cam belt one tooth out ) same if injector pump is a tooth out but noisier. you need to remove the fan hub bracket to see the timing mark for the IP drive pully also the injector pump internals can be assembled 180 degrees out resulting in injection at bottom dead centre , extreem noise ,heaps of smoke and will barely move the car in first gear also the crank timing mark is only visible with the front harmonic balance flywheel and timing belt cover removed . answer to the other question why not a rover diesel . the 2ct ues heaps less fuel revvs heaps harder comes factory balanced is heaps quieter and lasts heaps longer there is no contest with the rover diesel the 2ct weighs less to the down side is that the turbo usualy fitted on the 2ct is under sized and very short lived. boosts early for low down torq but is unable to breath at the high revvs that this engine loves. turbo getts too hot at highway speeds and melts bearings if not warmed down . mine has a water cooled turbo of a 2.8 izuzu motor from a trooper/jackeroo im soon fitting this engine and turbo into 79 chrysler scorpion. this engine when decompressed to 17 to one with hot glow plugs handles 30 psi boost, you can get three different thickness head shims for this motor to decompress , ignore petro company propaganda ive done 300,000+ kms burning everything from lard mixed with alchohol to canola and sunflower blended with jet fuel ,petrol, sump waste oil a good injecor pump will feed an engine anything thicker than kerosine so long as its hot(80 to 100degrees c) even lard and sumpoil the thicker the oil the more lubricating and the longer the pump and injectors last so long as the oil is well filtered and free of water

My 2003 diesel prado gives off a heavy puff of white smoke smelling of diesel when I start it cold, the engine also have a uneven idle for the first few seconds.

sounds like injector is leaking letting fuel leak into a cyclinder the smoke is raw unburned fuel then it takes a minute or so to clear the cyclinder

Engine idles rough and puffs black smoke out exhaust

on petrol engines is caused by excissive rich mixture,on diesels the injectors need servicing as injectors are not atomizing properly the diesel and just dribling excess fuelwhich is the black smoke

Car smoke white when idle and nothing when driving

Engine also smokes when car driving if turbocharger still faulty. Did you change the engine timing belt (the timing belt kit) meantime? What about engine oil consumption? When engine glow plugs (one or more) burnt then engine exhausts white smoke at idling. Also white smoke at engine idling when water is still present in diesel fuel.

We think it is the diesel injection pump but not sure

Sounds like not all the glow plugs are working. It should run fairly smooth on a cold start if all of the glow plugs are working..Also you shouldn't drive off on a cold start with a diesel,Its really hard on the motors..At least give them 10 to 15 min on a cold start..The oil in them is a really thick oil and when there drove on a cold start theres no oil lubricating the internal parts and will cause the motor to seize up..You may already no this and dont mean you drive it as soon as you start it i just wanted to let you know..When you get alot of white smoke it could be two things,Theres water in the fuel which will make it not have much power die and smoke..But if it runs fine when its warm theres some bad glow plugs...Hope this helps you and have a great day

1992 gmc sierra turbo diesel starts and idles fine until warm up

It's time for a Italian tune up!

The blue smoke can be one of two thing.

oil drop from the valve stem (from engine head to cyclinders)
or
diesel soot collect inside the exhaust system.

===
I will take a 5-10 minutes high rpm (not redline) ran on the highway.
Pay close attention to the rear view mirror and look for black diesel soot.
=== I will use Diesel Cleen or similar product to condition the fuel. (keep moisture down)
Use the recommended amount of SEAFOAM oil additive to condition the valve stem seal/rubber parts.

I can not rule out excessive blown by.
Can you get a diesel compression tester?
When was the last valve adjustment?

Please post the actual odometer on the engine and I will follow up on it.
