Question about 2003 Ford Escape
You can go to an auto store and ask for assistance from the attendants, a lot of auto part stores do have loaner tools, where you will be required to leave a deposit (usually the cost of the item) or your i.d.:
In your case you would ask for the OBD-ll, its a hand held computer systems diagnostic. You just hook it up to the computer connection on the inside of the vehicle (the store will give you assistance at your request). The OBD-ll will give you a code which you can look up in the Hanes manual for Ford and your year and model. From there you go to page 6-4 and it will give you all the codes with their explanation.
From there you will know what need to be repaired saving yourself money for diagnostics at an auto shop, you can tell them exactly what you want done. Or if you want to attempt the task your self Hanes will give a step by step instruction on what to do.

Could be about 5000 things that would make the engine light come on. What I would suggest is take it to Autozone and they will put it on their diagnostic machine, free of charge. This will give you codes for the sensor that is making the engine light come on. Usually it is an O2 sensor. But they will tell you for sure.
PLEASE rate by checking one of the 4 thumbs ups.

error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
