I would check the idle air control valve and the throttle body.
The valve could be faulty or the throttle body could have dirt blocking the air passage.
If you keep the RPM above idle speed does it still stall ?

1995 chevy tahoe 4wd. 5.7 liter when cooled down, starting is normal . Right after, engine almost stalls but Idle air control kicks in and keeps it running. eventually it is idling but rouph. On...

If your vehicle has one, and I think it does, check your EGR system. If the egr valve is full of carbon, it can be partially open, creating a vacuum leak. If the egr valve solenoid is bad, it could be opening the valve at the wrong time, also creating a vacuum leak. Unplug the egr vacuum hose, plug the open end of the hose and start it and see what it does. A picture of the egr is below.

My 2006 escape 3.0 idles rough but seems to run smooth down the road.engine light is on and shows code po402 excessive egr flow. engine starts fine when cold, but cranks for about 10 seconds unless you...

P0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vacuum
  • Solutions
  • With a P0402, it is common for people to replace the EGR valve, only to have the problem return. The most likely solution is to replace the DPFE sensor.
    • Check the voltage at the DPFE sensor both at idle and when the EGR is open
    • Replace the DPFE sensor

When you shut off the motor, see if fuel is dripping from the injectors. It sounds like one might be leaking.

1st start of the day. revs up then stalls.

check for coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant.
smoke is comming from somewhere, most likely burning coolant from blown head gasket. or rings are smoked and burning oil :( gunk on egr is probably burnt coolant. sorry for the bad news :(
