I have an 02 wrangler and the oil preasure goes down when Idling is that an oil pump going bad?

First we would need to know when this occurs. Asuming the oil level is at the full mark!. If the pressure goes up during acceleration and down at idle when engine is fully warmed up, then this is normal. An engine requires 10 psi of oil pressure per 1,000 rpm ( ex. 20 psi at 2,000 rpm, 25 psi at 2,500 rpm, and so on ) . If the gauge is moving back and forth erratically at idle , i would say the gauge is bad. If it drops to 0 while accelerating I would say your oil pump is bad. If from time to time it seems to work and other times it seems not to work, I would say the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is bad. If the pump failed you would start to here a Knocking noise from the engine in a short period of time. Use the above scenario's to narrow down what it may be.

Go back to where you got the work done if you can.If not then i would get the oil preasure checked as the low light tells me the preasure is below 8 psi and the ticking is from the lash adjustors at the tappets verifys low preasure too.

02' jeep wrangler oil pressure goes all the way up


your pressure sending switch could be going bad id try replacing that first its easier and cheaper. make sure the oil level is not too high also.if all is good then the switch can be bad or the gauge itself.

You are correct. the fuel system is loosing preasure while sitting and then it takes time for it to build back up, you will not smell the fuel because its the preasure regulator valve in the fuel pump, so it just drain back into the tank,this is common on chry,and jeeps. the preasure regulator in the pump is bad, you will need to replace the pump asm. this will solve your starting problem, hope this is helpful.

Could be your oil pump going bad, could also be because the bearing tolerances in your motor have gotten larger due to the mileage, especially if your oil hasn't been chnged regularly. Try a lower viscosity oil, it is easier for the oil pump to pumo thru the system.

Not enough oil pressure while idling


Not really, when the oil is cold it is thicker so the pump is pushing the oil at a greater pressure.

When the oil gets hot, it is LESS thick than when it was cold, so naturally the pump does not have to work as hard to pump the hot oil and the pressure goes down.

You can go to the next thicker oil recomended by the manufacturer for your engine and you should see the oil pressure higher than before.

Oil pressure guage pushes to 80 when not idling.


In an engine in good condition, oil pressure is a function of RPM. Higher rpm, higher pressure. Whne coasting downhill, in gear, the engine rpm will increase, hence, the oil pressure will go up, as required, and as expected.

There is nothing wrong with your engine, unless the oil pressure goes excessively high under any regime. Low oil pressure is a sign of low rpm, or under load, a sign of worn parts.

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0L engine. The oil pressure gauge usually stays around 40 on the highway but when I come to a stop it drops down to 10. Is this normal or is my oil pump getting ready...


No this is normal. As an engine wears then oil preasure will be less this is not due to a weak oil pump but wear in crank shaft bearing's. When an engine is new and bearings are tight then oil preasure wont fall a lot from reved up to idle as the engine wear's oil escapes quicker from the crank shaft bearings. Reved up oil preasure increases idle it drops off. If the oil light stays out then their is enough preasure to lubricate the engine. In fact in an older engine high oil preasure is a worse complaint as this means the oil system is clogging. All is ok with your pump. If the oil preasure is moving up and down at constant rev.'s then the oil pump is faulty. Hope this put's your mind to rest.

Oil pressure for my jeep 2002 wrangler


As long as it's not going down, and the engine isnt knocking, you do not have a terrible problem. I have used marvel oil in ones that do this and most times it clears up. If not, change the pressure switch. (Takes a few days before it get's better with mm oil)
