Sounds like it is the starter or ignition switch. To shade tree test the starter you can jump it out with a screwdriver, this is sort of tricky if you have never done it before. Someone will need to turn the key and then you take the screwdriver and tap the posts on the starter, if will arc the screwdriver., but start the vehicle. You can also pull the starter out and have it tested. The see if it is the ignition switch you will need to trace out the wires and make sure they are all working correctly. Good Luck Tim

Check fuse block. check for in-line fuse in wire going to starter. check wiring and connections at starter. check solonid from switch to starter.

1998 Jeep Cherokee -- car won't start. Turns over

have scanned to find problem code to get an idea of what it is. .it may either be the crank or cam sensor, check the crank sensor first. if it is bad it sends wrong timing info to pcm. therefore jeep will not start!! It is either the camshaft or crankshaft positioner. I would check the crank pos. first. Zach Cabot, AR

It sounds like you need to get the starter motor either repaired or replaced. Due to constant trying to start the car, it maybe that the battery is discharged a bit, causing the engine not to respond as usual, so you have to give more throttle. First , get the starter sorted and charge the battery, then you will see how it goes . Hope this helps

I have a 1995 Cherokee 4.0. It wont start, acts like a big electrical problem-wont crank, sometimes there are no dash lights with the key on, no dome light. The engine trouble codes are 1 and 2, then the...

You have the code but are reading it wrong. Your code is 12...showing an electrical disconnect, likely at the battery terminals...remove and clean them. It's possible that the disconnect is elsewhere, but that is the most likely place.

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.
