Question about 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

My battery/alternator light is coming on intermittently. Having the local auto part company hook it up to the computer, everything tested good when the light was not lit. Three days later the light came on and the alternator showed no output. Is this likely to be an alternator problem? So far I have not found any loose connections.

What could be causing my van to pull so much power

First of all, is alternator charging the battery. Battery voltage when engine is off, should be at least 12.6 or better at battery posts.less than 12.4 with engine off. Battery is going bad. When engine is running at battery should be at least 13.8 to 14.2 or more if alternator is charging. You can go to any auto parts store, and get the charging system checked for free Advanced auto, Auto-zone, ETC, Good-Day! if battery and alternator are good. Heres how to check for a current drain. Disconnect negative terminal from battery, Hook a test light to the negative cable. connect opposite end of test light to battery negative post . wait at least 5 minutes, with test light hooked up. if light is on. Then start pulling fuses in fuse box, when the light goes out. thats the problem circuit.

What does it mean when your battery light is on then cuts off when you start diving then when you make a stop cut back on

The battery light is telling the driver the alternator is not charging the battery. The alternator output has to be above 12 volts to make the light go off.

Dashlights and radio flicker and battery light come on

It could be a couple things. Take it to a shop or a place like auto zone and have them test the alternator and the battery, its free :) If they both are testing as good, the next thing would be to check the battery terminals and connections. It simply is not getting the enough charge back to the battery for one reason or another.

Alternator tests good wont charge battery

I'm sorry to say it could be the computer.
The computer controls idle speed as well as alternator output.
If the check engine light is on you should get it scanned for trouble codes.

Why is my battery light is coming on.

Loose or intermittent connection at the battery, alternator, or other wire associated with the starting/charging system.

Battery light comes on intermittantly while driving I had the battery tested and alternator everything was fine???Is it safe??

You have an intermitt issue. Test battery voltage when light is on. More than likely alternator (also check the belt that drives it) or poor battery connection (must be clean and tight).

My vehicle has a new battery but when I start it it will run for awhile then everything starts to cut off. My ABS light comes on then all others start turning off, including the radio , dash, and all...

It sounds like your alternator is not charging the battery. With the engine running, check the battery voltage with a voltmeter. It should be above 12V (probably over 13V). If the voltage is not over 12V, turn off the engine. Check the alternator fuse. If it is ok, remove the alternator and have it tested at a local auto parts store. Replace if necessary.

1997 ford taurus GL battery light stays on or sometimes dim alt. checks o.k. what is the problem.

When you say it check ok, can you please explain what you mean in more detail, because if your Alternator light comes on or is dim, your alternator is likely not producing enough amps to fully charge the battery. The battery may test good, but the alternator has to work too hard to keep it charged. Have a check run on the amperage output on your alternator to see if it produces the factory recommended amperage. You can get a tester or probably borrow one from Auto Zone auto parts if there is one near you. If not, you can buy an amp tested from your local auto parts store or you can take it to your local shop and they might test it for free.

Alternator keeps going bad - three so far. Battery light flickering off/on now.

You have probably been getting 'rebuilt' units which is not bad in itself but if the rebuilder received a batch of bad diodes they may have these failures until they are exhausted.
But, buddy, you ain't broke my record yet; a lousy Saturn (LAST GM I will own!) bought new, ate SIX (6) alternators in 57,600 miles. That wasn't the worst problem; it ate the auto tranny at 31,000 and dropped a rod cap at the above final mileage.
