Question about Toyota Sienna

1 Answer

When we turn on our 2000 Toyota Sienna van everything sounds fine but the minute we put it into reverse to back out of our gararge it makes kind of a high pithced noise and it kind of sputters when we step on the gas. If we put it back in park the noise stops. Also the check engine light will come on and stay on and some times it will blink off and on. We can also hear the noise if we put the van in drive and you can feel the sputter in drive also. Any ideas before I take to the dealer and pay big $$

  • If the sound you're refering to is a screaching sound, the PK belt may be worn and slipping....The PK belt is the new type of fan belt used these days....Its flat and has groves that go around the whole length. The number of grooves give the PK number and the length is indicated usually in inches and centimeters....

When running correctly it should be tight and when pressed have little or no play....I'm assuming you don't have a gauge to test with. On top of the alternator ythere is an adjusment bolt....To adjust, get a light and shine it on top of the alternator....You'll see a locking nut behind the front bracket of the main body....Loosen that first and then chave a look at the condition of the belt....If it needs replacement a good idea is to make a drawing of the lacing before you remove it....If its loose and cracked you'll need a new one, if not tighten it via the adjuster at the top of the bracket....When your done, tighten the locking nut again....The misfire or jerking may be coming from a low voltage output from the alternator....

If this info is not what your looking for, let me know and we'll go deeper, but I'll need more info from you....Regards Johngee10

Before you take it to the dealer, take it to an independent shop to diagnose it. they will charge you a lot less. A scanner can be hooked up to diagnose the problem. You do not have to take it to the dealer, for there are shops that are just as qualified to repair your vehicle. They will have certified techs and equipment to diagnose it.

Remote start on my 2000 Toyota Sienna van starts fine but after a couple of minutes shuts off and repeatedly restarts and shuts off. I have prestige remotes. Otherwise i don't know the model.

Prestige is a line of vehicle security and remote starts made by audiovox. Sounds like either a bad connection or a defective brain. Any car audio shop should be able to diagnose....however i would try to find a prestige dealer. While labor will not be under warranty the unit itself may be.

Battery fully charged, engine won't start or even turn over, gear locked in park, brake pedal is depressed.

This may help: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/274-2nd-generation-2004-2010/199861-04-sienna-transmission-lock.html

2000 Toyota Sienna tail gate latch is broken and can not open

Had this same problem on my 2000 Sienna. You have to purchase a new handle mechansm and install it from the inside. To do that you will need to crawl into the back of the van and remove the plastic cover. Once this is done you can snake a screwdriver in and pop the broken latch open. Then it is just a matter of unscrewing the old latch mechanism out and screwing in the new one, making sure to replace the latch wires appropriately.

Toyota 2000 Sienna LE. Problem - Engine won't stop even turned the key off and pulled it out. A high frequency noise under hood and last about 20 seconds and the engine turn it self off. Only happened...

I had a similar problem with a Previa. It occurred when starting the engine. Turns out the starter would not disengage from the fly wheel. I believe that the starter was the source of the high frequency noise. Had to disconnect the battery cable to stop the starter. Replaced the starter and everything was fine.
Good luck.

Toyota Sienna 2000 Mini-van. The driver's side power window.

I have the same problem with my 2000 Sienna.Probably window motor will need replacement. Frustrating. Turns out I have a lot of the same wear and tear issues with my Sienna as others. Automatic door sticks open or continually pops open, snapped rear hatch, tire pressure sensor always on. C'mon Toyota, I hope your newer models are more robust. FYI we take VERY good care of our van.
