Have your mechanic check the drive shaft. You might have a worn U-joint or yolk.

If it is a clunk noise/feel then see that topic already discussed. Output shaft yolk to driveline issue. Replace output shaft yolk with nickel plated yolk. Chevy dealer will know the part you need.

What's your problem?noise when in 4wd

if its the noise that happens when you shift it from 2wd to 4wd that is most likely normal, unless it is continuing on after the shift to 4wd,The other that it could be is a universal joint that is sloppy/loose on the front slip yolk or the front wheels.to check it you nee to jack up the front end just till the front wheels are off the ground, and support with jack stands and chalk the back wheels, then try to move the front wheels from side to side to check if its a tie rod making the noise, then move the wheels up and down to see if the wheel bearings are bad or going bad.then spin the wheels seperatly 1 at a time and look and see if the u-joint is loose.you can also check the front drive shaft/slip yolk by doing this.

98 gmc sonoma w 2 pc drive shaft 2wd noise from rear u joint and vibration at 40mph and up. have replaced u joints and carrier bearing. rear ball and socket were dry and rusty.

remove the rear shaft from a 1990 full size gmc van (g-van) make sure the one you select has the scew on sleeve at the front of the rear section of the shaft
this will be the right lenght
take the rear yolk off your old shaft cut of the ball socket now get the same u-joint your truck calls for and mount the rear yolk (the section of the shaft that bolts to your rear end) to the new shaft
this works ive done it
you eliminate 2 of the 4 u-joints and lighten up your shaft this releives strain on you tranny and rear end when these u-joints and ball bearings fail they cause the vibrations which ruin the rest of your drive train also you gain 10hp
i spent 300 bucks rebuilding the OEM shaft and got no where so for 25 bucks i did this

How do you change the front universal joints on a 2003 dodge ram 2500 4x4

The drive shaft will need to be removed. Remove ujoint cap clips from yolk and shaft. Should be four all together.tap out the u joints.
Remove cap from new ujoint. place into yoke from outside. Slip ujoint inside, attach to cap. press ujoint into housing. do the same with drive shaft side. Dont forget to put the new clips provided, on the shaft and yolk

My 96 taho makes a noise

Change the U-joints on the rear drive shaft. They don't have to move to be bad. The bearing in the joints are rusted. Be sure to mark the yolks on your drive shaft and rear diff pinion. They are ballanced are must go back in the same way you took them apart.

With that being said, did you drop the shaft an dnot put it back in the right way? that will cause a vibration. Also, have you checked to see if there is any play in your pinion shaft?
