Question about 1991 Volvo 740

1 Answer

My 1991 Volvo 740 runs great but if you excellerate too fast it will return to idle and pushing the gas will not do anything. I turn off the key and restart it and it will go again. If I go easy it will get up to 70-80 miles per hour. I have changed the fuel filter and the air flow devise. It didn't help. What can I do now. It must be the fuel pump, I don't think so, or the computer. Help Don Carlos

If I speed up slowly I can go to 70-80 but if I push too much gas it will drop off to idle and I must turn off the key and turn on again and it is good to go

Check your crank sensor. The symptoms you describe indicate a timing error. When you push hard the ECU tries to advance the ignition according to the signals it receives from the the crank position sensor CPS. These signals are either being interrupted or corrupted. Make sure the cps connection is dry, free of dirt and corrosion and that there is continuity in the wires with no obvious breaks or insulation removed. Remove the CPS and check that it is clean and free of body cracks. If problems persist swap the crank sensor out for a new one. These sensors are prone to heat and age.

COLD START ISSUE

try pushing the 4 wires on the radio supression relay into the connector, then try starting it... does it start, run, then die? those connectors ****, i've had the same prob. have you let it huff on some ether? (starting fluid) does it come to life? that would confirm weather or not it its fuel related. my 740 i was loosing voltage to my injectors 10 volts and under, causeing them to inttermittantly not fire, caused by a bad connection at that supression relay.

Can you lock a '91 740 volvo without the key?

We have the '90 940, have you tried this; when the kids are piling out we reach through the back door and push down the lock button on the drivers door, this locks all the doors without the key...also helps if you have an armful of bags..just make sure your keys aren't still inside!!

Adaptive idle control - 1991 volvo 740 -B230 engine

I suggest you check your fuel pressure and your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF). The fuel pumps and the MAF often fail causing these symptoms, but there may be other issues too. I suggest you take it to a qualified mechanic to avoid replacing unnecessary parts, since there are several possible problems.
