Question about 1995 Toyota Corolla

Hi, My Check Engine light came on and now the car shakes when idle in park and runs sluggish when driving and hesitates when going up a hill. How should I trouble shoot this problem from the sequence of most likely to least likely?

First extract the trouble codes as follows:

  1. Make sure the battery voltage is at least 11 volts.
  2. Make sure the throttle valve is fully closed.
  3. Place the gear shift lever in Neutral. Turn all accessories off.
  4. The engine should be at normal operating temperature.

Find this connector in your engine compartment:

  1. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the Data Link Connector 1 (DLC1).
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON , but do not start the engine. Read the diagnostic code by the counting the number of flashes of the malfunction indicator lamp.
  3. Codes will flash in numerical order. If no faults are stored, the lamp flashes continuously every 1 / 2 second. This is sometimes called the Normal or System Clear signal.
  4. After the diagnosis check, turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper wire.

Here are the meaning of the codes. Sorry if it's too hard to read.

If you have access to a scan tool you should check the codes first. It probably has a code for a missfire, P0300 - P0304. First check the spark plugs for carbon tracking down the outside of the porcelin, and check the gap to see if they are worn out. If there is carbon streaks down the outside, replace the plugs and wires. If none, check all four wires for spark. If one has no spark, switch wire with another and see if problem stays on that cylinder or follows the wire. If still on that cylinder, suspect coil. If you have spark on all 4, check fuel injectors, disconnect connectors of each one at a time and see what one doesn't make a change in engine speed. The one that doesn't cause a change is the faulty injector

I would start with igntion. Sounds to me like there is a misfire. You can check spark plugs to see if there worn out or carbon tracked. Carbon tracking will look like a thin black line eroded into the white part of the spark plug. If you see this you'll need to replace the plug and wire.

Check the part of the wires that go into the spark plug tubes for since of burning. Sometime the spark will go through the side of the wire and ground to the tube in the head. You can also spray the wires with soapy water and see if they leak. I think that one has a distributor so you can also spray the cap with soapy water as well. You know if there leaking if you see spark jumping to ground.

I think you'll find your problem in one of the areas above.

. The answer is to replace all the spark plugs and wires. Even if the plug appears fine to the ***** eye, and the wire has no visible damage, there could be problems with it that cause it not to fire properly. if you have coils on it, check them also.
An ignition coil that is failing will still provide current to the plugs, but it might not be enough for a full spark and the car will run sluggishly. If the current being provided by the coil isn't consistent, the car will run rough. make sure your getting good spark from coil first. good-day !

Have you replaced the timing belt? if not i would highly recommend doing so. these cars need to have the timing belt replaced before it breaks otherwise it can and will cause major engine damage.

Idle raises at a stop.

When you have the car in gear there is a load on the engine. If you are for some reason not getting good fuel then its trying to compensate by kicking the idle up. When you are just in park there is no load so its not struggling. Regularly using a fuel system cleaner will help with rough idle, as well as hesitation. Also it might be good to check the fuel pressure regulator.
