Usually caused by clogging or bad valve. Valve can fail by clogging, torn diaphram, or bad/loose vacuum actuation hose.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system - insufficient flow detected

Causes: Hose leak/blockage, basic setting not carried out (if applicable), wiring, EGR valve, EGR solenoid, ECM

Your EGR valve should be on top of the engine in the front between the intake manifold and the pulleys. It looks something like this:

check engine code 2001 ford taurus p0401 - 382f71b.jpg
First, make sure the vacuum hose is good and run it down to where it connects to the intake manifold to check for any leaks. If that's good and you want to get your hands dirty, take the valve off and see if it's clogged. clean it and see if you can actuate it with vacuum (put a vacuum hose on it, ****, and see if it will open. Also, look to see if there is gunk in the line and intake where it connects. Clean out anything you can with carb cleaner.
If you can get it unclogged and the valve is working, put the valve back on with a new gasket, else buy a new one ($40 at autozone :o( ). If you solve the issue, the engine light should clear after a couple hours of driving. OK?

2000 FORD TAURS ERROR CODE P0401 CAR WONT START

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus with 168,000 miles on it. after a tune up I also had the check engine light come. I looked for answers and took it upon myself to change some of the obvious things. I replaced the EGR valve and the vacuum solenoid. Still wouldn't clear the code. Found a site (Link at the bottom) that said it is the EGR Pressure sensor that is the root of all these darn codes. It's located between the intake and the firewall. It has a connector and 2 rubber hose connections. $35 bucks later and what do you know...all fixed, now I can smog this thing. wish I would have found this info sooner. 2000 Taurus

Problems with EGR system

is it code P0401? If so the DPFE sensor is bad. It is the sensor to the EGR valve. Very common

Check engine light on 401

Should be the same as the Contour. Try these items, let me know.

go to www.contour.org a web site for contours, i got alot of info on
the old P0401 trouble code over there.. will cover your taurus as well
as the contours..... one is to clean the manifold by pulling off the
throttle valve body and pulling all the carbon deposits out of the
openings.. i had the P0401 on my 96 contur and changed out the EGR, the
EGR vacuum modulator and still have the problem code and will get to the
cleaning behind the throttle body when i get a chance to get to it....
been like this for about 2 yrs. now... no problems running the car, just
the light stays on... i can get it to go out by disconnecting the
battery but it comes back after two cycles in the car start up.....

you replaced the wrong part. a common problem with this code is the D.P.F.E. SENSOR. ford has revised this sensor due to so much trouble with the old ones. i would get this part from ford so you know you are getting the revised part

P0401. P0133, P1131- emmision test

Based on what the tech manuals say I would change the DPFE sensor for the EGR Valve, careful not to tear the special silicone rubber hoses that go to it from the exhaust, as a Ford dealer tech I saw these codes allot, and the DPFE sensor was almost always the issue or the hoses going to it.

Egr valve insufficient flow detected

You probably pulled a code p0401, insufficient egr flow. Your DPFE sensor is more than likely at fault. There has been a lot of trouble with these sensors. Then reset CEL or disconnect battery for 5 minutes.
