In a housing at the engine side of the upper radiator hose. Pressure test when you are done.

On the driver's side of the engine underneath the air intake. You would have to remove the intake and unbolt the metal pipe where the coolant goes into the engine to see it.

Potential Causes:
- Connector

- Defective Thermostat

Tests/procedures
1. Measure engine temperature and ensure it is getting up to proper operating temperature.
2. Connect a Volkswagen-compatible scan tool and monitor engine temperature on the scan tool. Compare to the actual engine temperature to determine if the coolant sensor is working correctly.

How fix heating coil

make and model of vehicle?

heater core will not cause your car to overheat, probably a plugged or defective thermostat. If you are getting steam on the windshield? you have a bad heater core.... if not, then focus in the thermostat, located on the engine block usually attached to the upper radiator hose.

Replacing a thermostat on the 4.2

The thermostat is located in a water neck on the driver's side of the engine below, and slightly behind the alternator. put a big drain pan under the vehicle. The thermostats I've seen are integral with housing.
Will set a P0128 code I believe when t-stat is defective, and will need to be cleared, if that is set in ECM. Make sure to run engine afterwards and keep filling coolant until all air is removed from system and thermostat opens. Hose will feel hot.

The lower hose of the engine block just behind the alternator is where you will find the thermostat.

Locate the radiator, you will see a hose leaading into the engine. Trace this hose to shere it enters the engine. There should be two bolts, loosen these pull the hose up and you will se the thermostat. Befoe replacing it. Place it in some boling watwer, if it opens, the theromstat is not defective.

Overheating

Hi, the location of the thermostat depends on the engine type, so we'll need to know that first.
Tell me, does the electric radiator fan run? If not, the fuse for that could be blown, or the electrical connector corroded or dirty, or the temperature sensor or its connector might be defective. Location of thermostat might be in your User's Manual and definately in a Haynes or Bentley manual - highly recommended.

Hope this helps. If this "fixes ya", I'd appreciate a rating for my reply, If not, please delay the rating and "add a comment" with any extra info you have and I will try to think of something else.
