I found a little yellow piece with o ring in oil pan of an automatic transmission in an 03 ford econoline van

dont worry about that it is just a plug that is in the dipstick tube from factory. When they put the dipstick in it falls out and stays in the pan until you get a tranny service and change your fluid and filter

Transmission wont drive except for in reverse

check your transmition flewed level if its too low your van will only g in reverse put some in if your tranny is leaking replace it if its the tranny casing its self if its around the pan replace the pan gasket also check the hoses going from the tranny to the radiater

i hope this helps

HOW TO CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL

I'm assuming that you have an automatic tranny.
Engine must be warm.
Raise the hood.
Get in and shift thougth ALL gears starting with low and go through up to drive, reverse, ect stopping at each selection for a second or two.
Put in park, reomove the tranny dipstick and wipe off.
Insert and remove dipstick again and check the level.
Add fluid through the dipstick holder if more is needed.
Add the fluid very slowly.

Possible transmission out not sure

When was the last time you had transmission oil changed and the tranny pan removed and the tranny filter changed? If never, this is your starting point.

The problem with these vans is that the tranny pan is at about a 20 degree angle under the transmission near the driver front tire. The problem with this design is that these pans eventually begin to leak at the lowest point of the pan, and over time you will not notice the ATF loss. Most likely your ATF level or cleanliness/viscosity may be bad.
Don't cry 'TRANSMISSION' until you get your tranny serviced (ATf oilc change, new tranny filter, clean magnets, clean pan, clean tranny).

All other gears work? Can you desribe the part? Can you push the vehicle forward or backward in park?

1984 F150 302 Had oil pan gasket and both valve cover gaskets

you have several points to check!
the dip stick tube has a "O" ring seal at the bottom where it fits to tranny.
a reverse switch on tranny & the shifters selector shaft has a seal that may be leaking !
there are the cooler pipes from cooler to tranny [in & out] plus pump seal to the torque converter [leaks out between engine & tranny bellhousing] & then there are the drive shaft or shafts seals
so wipe it all clean & park it in a diffrent clean spot!
some will only leak when its runnung due to tranny,s internal pressure!

Oil Consumption

Not always rings. Sometimes valve guides go bad. Thiese will allow oil to seep down into the combustion chambers. Check to see if you notice a light discharge of white smoke from the tail pipe when you start it up. This usually occurs after the car has been sitting a while(overnight, etc)

Oil consuption

Try to determine how much is leaking by putting a plastic pan under car overnight..
Typical leak sources are pan gasket, oil plug, oil pressure sender.

If burning oil, it will be obvious at startup and/or from the rear while driving especially during hard acceleration. Have some drive behind you to observe. They'll see obvious bluish smoke.

If burning is most responsible, and not much is leaking, you may have worn valves or piston rings.
Both fairly expensive to repair. As a temporary cheap solution, add oil additive (such as STP or Rislone) to reduce burning (it may slow the leak a bit too).
