Question about 2002 Suzuki XL-7
If you pull out the little circuit board in the remote, you will find some connectors on the other side from the battery which complete a circuit when you push the buttons. sometimes if you take a pencil eraser, or other gentle abrasive, and gently clean those connectors your remote will come back to life. otherwise you may want to buy a used replacement on ebay, take it to a dealer to have them teach your car to know its new remote, in a biblical way.

SOURCE: Keyless Entry and Remote
I have had this problem take you drivers door put your key and un-lock from the out side with key (NO) then open the door push un-lock from the inside button and then set from you remote and it should set if not push un-lock then lock and then do the un-lock with the key. Let me know if that works. what my car did was locked from the inside and I had the problem were it would not work till I un-locked from the out side plus I had to go to radio shack and change the battery from the control.
Hope good happens.

Apparently, there may be two main types of Toyota Prius key fobs. One opens by sliding the logo panel revealing four tiny cross head screws. The other, that snaps apart by prying it with the key. The problem is that if you pry apart the one with the sliding panel, you will have to find a suitable glue to hold it back together. And, you still have to remove the sliding panel to replace the batteries. So be careful and try to see if you have a sliding panel before you try to pry it apart, like I sadly did.
