Question about 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

I have a 1996 Ford Grand Marquis that the air suspention light on dash is coming on. The back of the car is low to the ground now and I am not sure what is going on with it. I have been told by someone that the car has a baffle suspention instead of shock. What do I need to do and what kind of cost can I expect?

What you need to do is go to a repair shop that can do a specific scan. This scan is for the Air Suspension. Of course a Dealer can do it, but I want to save you money. You will need to call around to places that do Alignment or Body work. They may have the correct scanner. Some Autozone and Oreillys do free scans on engines, but you would have to ask if they can do the Air Suspension.

Sometimes problems occur after someone jacks up the car without disabling the Air Suspension. There is a cutoff switch in the trunk, Drivers side next to the fuelpump switch. You can try flipping the switch ON, if you just had work done on your vehicle they may have turned it off.

There is a fuse in the fuse panel for this device, you can try checking it, but usually a problem would cause the fuse to fail and the problem needs to be fixed. There are simple switches which can be replaced one by one, which can return the pump to action.

This is why I suggest the scan, because it can find the problem quickly and the mechanic can verify it is fixed with another scan after the part is replaced. If you find it is too much $$$ to repair, there are some Spring shops which can replace the Air ride with regular springs. There are Salvage Yards that good body shops can get used parts from. This is alright because the rest of the parts on your car are also used. It will save you money.

I hope this answers your question to your satisfaction.

1995 grand marqui won't air up

They may have hit something underneath with the lift table.
You might want to check the fuse panel and switch the suspension button off and on a few times. It should have coded on the dash.
The dealer should have a diagnostic plug to fit your vehicle. Its the least he could do to diagnose a problem he may have caused.

The compressor is in the drivers front sitting low on the frame and about even with the oil filter on the engine. Remember it may still have pressure.
