In my experience the usual culprit is the evap cannister. the problem is it gets moisture in it and freezes during winter thus cracking the plastic. if you lay under the car and look at the evap box it black plastic and if you see a loose or cracked hose or the box itself is cracked that is most likely it. as a side note you can check the gas cap and buy a new one to see if that rectifies the situation. lastly i don't think the gas tank should be suspect as you would probably notice if gas was leaking out of the tank. if you take the car to a dealer or shop they can do a smoke test and determine where the leak is.

ok, i was told that i needed the evap cannister replaced about 6 months ago when it was warm but the check engine lighe came on around last january. i was driving the other day and my car kind of studderd then died.. could it be that moisture got in to it, cracked it and its just now to the point that its not allowing gas to flow anymore or is it more than likely my fuel pump? i ordered the solenoid and was going to try that since it needed to be replaced anyway also is there anything else i need to do to purge the system/lines or will simply replacing the cannister do the trick?

Why is my 2010 ford fusion is throwing code po455. no gas cap required

P0455 is Evaporative Emissions System Leak Detected (Large) and means that there is a large leak in the system probably with one of the EVAP hoses near the fuel tank or EVAP canister or maybe even A leaky purge valve.
