Won't start and the dials on the guages move back and forth while trying to start it. The car has been sitting for a week.

Bad pressure sending unit?

I had almost the same problem. but my gas guage would stop and say i had more gas than what was in it. and the speedo would say i was doing 70 sitting still. but the problem is the step motors are or are going bad. that's why they are jumping around. two ways to fix it. 1 look up a shop that can replace them and the cost will be for one each and around $50 to $100 each. Or you can do like i did and went on Ebay and buy the hole instrument cluster with all new step motors just a plug and play type of thing. On ebay i was very satified with Digital Dash Solutions. And they will offer you the factory replacement or you can up grade the dash for i think $50 to how you want it to look.

If the ignition switch is jammed, and you cannot free it by moving the steering wheel back and forth while trying the ignition switch, simply replace the ignition switch tumbler and lock assembly with a new one. Before going to the trouble of replacing the entire ignition switch, try squiring a moderate amount of WD-40 or other light penetrating oil into the ignition switch key hole, let it sit overnight, then try again the next morning. Often, that will clear the issue.

Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

Assuming that you have a VE Bosch pump more or less mechanical pump, but controlled by a magnetic actuator.. Firstly you need ot buy a cheap small dial guage and make an adaptor with a m8 fine thread to screw into the middle hole in the pump injector block and support your dial guage. I picked up a m8x20mm fine thread bolt and drilled a tight hole in it into which the dial guage stem tightly fits. This screw to remove is a blanking plug and has a copper washer to seal it. The adaptor is to hold the dial guage firmly while you take measurements. You probably will then need to make an extension finger to the dial guage movement. I used a piece of brass wire with a washer soldered onto its end. This is to measure the amount that the plunger lifts off being closed. Test before you install the pump into the engine body that it shows the opening and closing on a rotation of the pump shaft. That means you have to have a plunger that touches the lifter inside. Align up the markers on the pump gear, the vacuum pump and the intermediate gear. Shoehorn in the pump. Lightly tighten the three clamping screws/nuts. Wind the engine(pump) around and get a feel for the guage moving up and down. Set the engine on TDC. and rotate the pump body until it shows a lift of 0.38mm +-0.02mm (apparently this pump has a very small lift compared with many pumps). It is just starting to open. Wind the engine back and then move it forward again to negate backlash in the gears and check that it is still correct and your guage has not slipped. Tighten the bolts and remove the guage, fit the pipes etc etc. Note that the pump lift plunger has a hole in it, so you have to make your extension finger to the dial guage sit over the hole.

Check the wire harness plugs in the back of the guage package... They might be loose and making and breaking connection when you hit a bump... Two upper, two lower screws normally on imports and domestics on the guage cluster...

i know that vauxhalls dont start of the key if the guage sits at 1/4 onthe dial,but if it moves 3 ft it starts ,fit a new set of plugs,u never said how old the car was,
