What does code PO431 mean on 03 Kia XL. My check engine light is on. Auto zone said I needed to replace Catalytic Converter(s). Does anyone know how many Catalytic Converters are on it?

code p 0431 refers to warm up catalytic converter, bank 2--efficiency below threshold === causes ---cat converter---wiring---HO2S sensor 2
it should be a v6 engine as it has 2 banks , bank 2 is the one closest to the grill.
there should be 2 cat converters ( one for each bank)
from the suggested causes , I suspect that the HO2S sensor is not performing properly and is not providing the correct mixture to the cat converter to make it operate properly
if you bump the cat converter with the hand and it rattles , it will need replacing and autozone would be right
However I am always of the opinion that you should seek other advice from an accredited exhaust specialist shop and get a quote as cat converters are not cheap

Replace the O2 sensors first, that may take care of the code you are getting saying catalytic converter. If you get the code after that I would think you would be able to just replace catalytic converter, but make sure the rest of the exhaust is clear. I have seen a piece fall down inside a muffler and plug it off giving problems also.

Catalytic converter or Oxygen sensor

If you smell rotten eggs its usually the cat is stopped up. Go to rockauto.com and look it up, you can try the O2 sensor there also. Just bought an O2 for my Toyota for $19.

What was the exact code? The O2 sensor after the Catalytic Converter, or Rear O2 Sensor, could be faulty which would cause the computer to think the Catalytic Converter is not working efficiently. The code can be reset at the auto parts store with the same code reader they used the first time. P0420 is the most commonly thrown OBDII code pertaining to catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. I would replace the O2 sensor after the Catalytic Converter and reset the computer to see if the code comes back. If it comes back you may have a bad catalytic converter, exhaust leak, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors, plugged catalytic converter, etc.

Check engine light code is p0420 and it dont tell me where this sensor is what is catalyst system bank 1 low efficiancy

There is not a problem with a sensor there is a problem with the catalytic converter. P0420 sets when the downstream o2 sensor is either reading higher than expected or reading simular to the upstream O2 sensor. Either way it is usually the catalytic converter that is the source of the problem and rarely the downstream O2 sensor.

The Catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system under the car. Catalytic converters from either the dealer or a quality direct fit part from a reputable manufacturer are recommended. Cheap cats lead to lots of problems!

Hello, when I see stuff like this it is upsetting. He should have known long before 27 days what was wrong with your car.

Do a Web search for the Catalytic converter. They are available as an aftermarket part. Try autoparts123.com. You can also make a used Catalytic converter work. Try car-parts.com for used Salvage parts. The Catalytic makes bad exhaust gases better and affects the way your engine runs.

Use your browser and enter 2005 taurus catalytic converter as a search. Salvage auto parts can even come with varying lengths of warranties and can be shipped UPS. FEDEX, and by bus.

The $1800 for the transmission is in the ballpark. When you order the Catalytic converter you will need to know the engine side and the whether it is a stickshift or automatic. You can also consult with the shop before ordering and see if he will install a Salvaged part or not.

I hope you find my solution very helpful.

Camshaft sensor and catalytic converter

Sometimes one problem causes many more. The camshaft sensor should be easy to access. Go to a good parts store and have a look at the diagram for part location. You may not need a Catalytic converter yet.

If the camshaft sensor went crazy you will not fire on all cylinders. Therefore the exhaust mixture will be rich and can damage the Catalytic converter. But when the repairs are made to the Camshaft sensor, give it some time to run correctly and see if the Catalytic converter clears up.

As with any repair, disconnect the NEG battery cable for 10 minutes to clear the old codes. Then use the car and let the car go for 300 miles or so to purge the Catalytic converter of excess fumes. Then if you need a newer Catalytic converter its almost like installing a muffler. You may need a special socket to change out O2 sensors from old to new.

Costs vary, Sensors are $20 to $50. Catalytics can be expensive, but Salvage yards have them used.

Need to know what p1188 is to diy er

SAE Code P1188 DTC Code 17596 Description Linear 02 Sensor / Compensator Resistor Short to ground SAE Code P1189 DTC Code 17597 Description Linear 02 Sensor / Compensator Resistor Short to B+ SAE Code P0170 DTC Code 16554 Description Fuel Trim, Bank1 Malfunction

Basically you need a new oxygen sensor, The fuel trim code is from the computer trying to adjust the fuel/Air mixture to compensate for the bad signal from the sensor. Just change the one closer to the engine, the one behind the Catalytic converter will thow a different code when it fails.
