Question about 1983 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I have a 1983 Honda Accord LX with the charging system light always on. I have had the altenator checked and it is putting out 14.89 and the battery is brand new but receives no charge from the altenator. I have been told to trace the wiring off the schematics and make sure all is working. What the heck is wrong ?

I had this problem about 10 years ago on my 1983 Honda Accord so I traced the wiring and found the problem to be with the cable connector that is near the battery. I removed the battery and traced the cable from the alternator to the connector that is located near the bottom of the battery. I unplugged it and checked to see if all the pins were making good contact. Two of them (the main wires from the alternator output) were deteriorated to the point they actually melted part of the plastic plug. Since I wasn't working on a new car, I simply cut the wires from the connectors, stripped about 1/2 inch of the insulation and installed a large wire nut that made a very tight connection when I tightened the wire nut with pliers. I still drive the car every day and haven't had any more trouble with that issue. It would be a good idea to check all the wires in this connector since one of the smaller ones could be broken at the connector itself.

Any help would be great, as I am battling a wiring issue badly at the moment. the harness that runs from the alternator to the pigtail near the battery have all fried and melted together, and it a pain trying to find a pigtail. am I able to just saolder all the wires direct to each other without the need of a pigtail?

My car recently had an issue with charging the battery. We replaced the altenator. That did not fix the problem. Batter was still not getting charged. So we got a new regulator. Still nothing. I...

ALL OF THE FUSES NEED TO BE CHECKED WITH A FUSE TESTER. THERE ARE FUSES UNDER THE HOOD & INSIDE THE VEHICLE. ALSO, WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING AT A HIGH IDLE, PUT A VOLTMETER ON THE BATTERY. IT SHOULD READ BETWEEN 13.80 & 14.90 VOLTS. IF IT READS LOWER THAN 13.0 IT IS NOT CHARGING. IF IT READS TOO LOW MEASURE THE VOLTAGE AT THE ALTERNATOR WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING. IF IT READS TOO HIGH THE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING BUT THE VOLTAGE IS NOT GETTING TO THE BATTERY. YOU MAY HAVE TO REPLACE THE WIRE BETWEEN THE ALTERNATOR & THE BATTERY.

Battery light comes on perodically recently replaced altenator went away for two months now its coming on then going off.

while the engine off, the battery terminals will read at least 12.6Volts. If less replace the battery. While the engine is running the battery terminals will read 14 volts. If less then troubleshoot the charging system. Hope this will help.

Where did you buy the Alternator? It could be a defective unit. Chain auto parts stores have a poor record with rebuilds.

I have an 89 Honda Accord lx and it idles too low

The idle speed for my 88 accord lx is 700-850 rpm for standard idle speed. The stalling is a seperate issue. When were plugs, wires, air/gas filters and distributor last checked? How long has engine been running for when you stall? Is the temprature gauge high? Any lights coming on when stall occurs? I am not a mechanic, but a DYI'er. These are common questions I am always asked when troubleshooting my Honda. :)

1983 honda accord alternator not charging the battery. drains after few minutes

Sounds like you regulator points are staying closed, thus causing the no-charge condition as well as the severe drain on your battery. Check the fusable links, the ES1 and ES2 motors were famous for this in 82-85, but if they are fine, replace your alternator.
