Since sometime in the late 70's all GM alternators have the regulator inside the alternator.
On yours there likely are computer based components in there as well. (They just can't leave well enough alone)

The voltage regulator is built in, so the alternator will have to be replaced. It is cooled by engine coolant so the cooling system will have some drainage when changing this part.

Test Alternator and voltage regulator

voltage regulators are inside the alternator now.. they are built in..operating voltage should be 14.5-16..depending on load requirements most tool shops have a battery tester that checks load and battery condition as well as charging of the alternator.. these go for about 25-50 bucks I use mine all the time..

Battery good, alternator good, starter good but my 1966 oldsmobile the alternator isn't charging the battery

Have you replaced the voltage regulator?
Unless you have changed the charging system and eliminated it, the alternator does not have a built-in voltage regulator like the newer ones do.
Be blessed.

Why is my battery not charging

it takes two items for your battery to charge, a alternator, and a voltage reregulator. on newer cars the voltage regulators are built into the alternator, you can ask at the auto parts store if your voltage regulator is built into your alternator. check all of your fuses before you start with the alternator or the voltage regulator

I have a 2003 kia spectra 1.8 liter. The alternator isn't charging the battery but when I took it off and had it tested 3 times it passed every time. The belt is tight enough and I replaced the plug...

Hi, there are 3 fuses the the alternator needs to charge the battery. These may be inside the car or in a box in the engine compartment. They are named IG1, ECU, and ALT. If you have trouble finding them, please get back to me.

I have to put it a new voltage regulator on a 1986 Chrysler LeBaron, where is the voltage regulator located?

If the engine is the 2.6L the regulator is built into the alternator and is not serviceable. If the engine is a 2.2L or 2.5L then there may be a seperate regulator and it will be mounted to one of the inner fenders. Please rate this solution.

All alternators build after 1985 have the regulator in them, no exceptions.

Voltage regulator

Voltage regulator is built-in to the alternator assembly.

Have you tried replacing the battery?
A battery with a shorted cell will not charge properly and may even damage an alternator or regulator.

Note1: use a digital voltmeter (about $25 at Lowe's or Radio Shack) and check voltage across batt terminals while engine running. If more than 12.6 Volts DC and more typically about 13 Volts, then the alternator is working.

Note2: from Jan 98 to May 98 shows a different part # alternator than June - Dec 98
check the manufacture date on your driver door edge.

three things spring to mind... slipping belt,,,, voltage regulator or the alternator is going.... you can also unhook the connectors on the alternator... wirebrush them or gently sand them to ensure the best connection.... tighten them back up.... don't over tighten them as you can break a bolt off.

Robert

ps. usually the voltage regulator is built into the alternator... could be replaced seperately or you replace the whole unit.
