There is a plug under the mounting hole,if you pull the plug you can hold the rod up with an awl or suchlike.Or just put some heavy grease on the rod and it will stay put.

How to install a fuel pump into a 78 monte carlo

Remove the fuel lines and then the pump. You will see a bolt screwed flush into the block were the fuel pumps push rod is located. You will need to remove that bolt and get another one like it although an inch longer. That bolt will be used to hold the push rod in place when installing the new pump. After the installation is completed remove the extra long bolt and replace the original one back in

Fuel pump push rod

I would use something like the fuel pump listed here, this is a good performance fuel pump that will be able to feed that 454 engine, it comes with a fuel pressure regulator and you can either use a fuel gauge to set the fuel pressure or install an in-line fuel gauge near the carburetor to easily check and monitor the fuel pressure, and set the fuel pressure regulator for 7psi of fuel pressure, and any more fuel pressure than that and the fuel could be pushed past the needle and seat inside the carburetor.

I have a 1984 454, the push rod for the mechanical fuel pump is not moving. How can I fix it.

If the fuel pump rod is not stuck, and it does not move up and down when the engine is turned over, then most likely the camshaft would have to be replaced to restore the mechanical fuel pump function. The problem is that the fuel pump rod is ran off of an eccentric lobe on the camshaft itself, and that lobe has worn down until it is almost completely round and has no more lobe or "lift" to move the fuel pump rod, so the fuel pump rod will just sit there and barely move at all.

The quickest and the cheapest way to get that vehicle back on the road without having to replace the camshaft is to simply remove the fuel pump rod, and then purchase a block-off plate for the opening where the mechanical fuel pump used to be, or just replace the mechanical fuel pump and let it do nothing but seal off that opening, and then install an after-market electric fuel pump, and since that engine should have a carburetor if it had a mechanical fuel pump (either that or it had a low pressure throttle body injection system that does not require a lot of fuel pressure), then an after-market electric fuel pump for that engine will not be that expensive, and usually less than half the price of an electric fuel pump that would be needed to run a fuel injection setup. Let me know if you require any further assistance or any assistance with connecting an after-market electric fuel pump.

How to install a new fuel pump on a 1985 Chevy,305 V8,

Remove the plunger rod by removing the plate that is bolted to the block. Clean all parts if needed.

Apply some axle grease to the plunger rod and reinstall into the block, replace plate, then carefully install fuel pump, making sure the plunger is under the push rod.

Just did this same thing on my '66 283.

Trying to replace fuel pump in 1985 chevy 305. Can't get it to in

The push rod that runs the fuel pump has slid down, you can put some heavy grease on it and push it back up so it will stay. You also have a bolt hole in front of the engine block that has a short bolt in it, take it out and place a longer bolt that will tighten up on the push rod when you hold it up,not to tight. then slide fuel pump in and take long bolt out and replace with the original short bolt.

Fuel pump

If it is from the older GM casting there is a bolt hole that is in line with the rod. You can put a longer bolt in that hole and it will hold the rod. If it’s not there, push the rod into place. Bring the fuel pump down from the top and catch the rod with the pump lever.
