Fortunately, this problem is limited in possible issues. Look at correct and functioning, and tight fuel cap, which is most common issue. There are vent tubes, vapor seperators, charcoal canisters, and purge systems, but they all are pretty rugged and rarely fail...Usually the test centers pressureize the cap and the fuel tank. You really need to know which one failed.

Some test centers only read the computer data, but that should have invoked the indication light, and then you would certainly fail...if you have a check engine light, pull the codes and fix that indication.

My 05 ford focus Zx3 2.0L I went to smog for twice still don't passed the smog test the reader said cat is not ready evap is not ready 2 air is not ready what I have to do

Did you disconnect the battery recently? Or have the car worked on to correct a check engine light problem? And they reset the codes?

When this happens (loss of all power or code reset), the computer will run all its tests on all systems, and set a 'ready' condition when the tests are passed. Some tests require multiple 'drive cycles' or specific conditions (less than full tank of gas but more than 1/4 tank) to complete the test. Until all (or a specific number - some non-critical tests may be exempted) tests are 'ready', the car will not be passed. The assumption being that until a test is successfully completed, the computer may discover a problem with a system, one that would fail the smog test.

If you're confident that all problems have been fixed, you need to run through enough drive cycles so the computer can complete all required tests. Most ODBII code readers can also read the readiness of the systems. And most parts stores will read your codes for you (and system status) or let you borrow a reader.

Did not pass smog need help with error codes p0441,p0442,p0446

Some test should be about $25 and take about ten minutes once the car is up on the lift, after all it is just a diagnostic test to see if there any leaks. The car should be on the lift to check the EVAP piping all the way back to the tank. It is unlikely that the charcoal canister will need changing, they generally last longer than the car as they rarely wear out. The charcoal canister and the whole EVAP system merely absorbs fuel vapours rising of the fuel in the tank. When your engine is warmed up and doing more than 2,500 revs the EVAP purge and vent valves open to allow outside air to be drawn in through the canister to carry the small amount of trapped fuel vapour into the engine to be consumed as part of the normal fuel air mix. The computer normally commands the EVAP system to open and close the purge/vent valves check as part of an inbuilt leak detection protocol and has seen an anomaly, possibly the vent valve not closing properly. Once the nature of the leak is diagnosed it is matter of fixing it and it should not be an expensive or time consuming job. Take the car to other mechanics and get their opinion and guesstimates. Put it like this "would you smoke test my EVAP, fix the leak and clear the diagnostic trouble codes from my computer for $200 including taxes?" If the answer is no then ask how close they can get to this price.

The check engine light stays on or comes back on when doing smog test. It passed everything on the smog test except check engine light. The indicator code is P0446.

Your P0446 code is a Evap vent valve code: Evap vent valve has only one purpose. It closes in order to seal the vent so the EVAP system can pressurize and ensure there are no leaks. Evap vent valve is usually supplied Batt. voltage with key on. The ECM's driver controls the ground, and when grounded, activates the valve (closing it). If the ECM detects a short to ground, and open,or a short to battery voltage on the control circuit, P0446 will set. Code also may refer to ECM detecting that EVAP system is unable to achieve or maintain vacuum during test.
copyscape.gif Symptoms There will be no obvious symptoms to driver, other than MIL illumination.
Causes A code P0446 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty vent valve
  • Open, short or excessive resistance on Vent valve control circuit
  • Blockage of vent valve
  • Bad PCM
Possible Solutions With a P0446 OBD-II trouble code, here are some things to try:
  • Replace Vent valve
  • Repair open, short, or resistance problem in control circuit
  • Repair open, or short, or resistance problem in power circuit
  • Replace PCM

My 1991 Chevy lumina 4 door sedan keeps failing smog cause of the fuel evap test how can i diagnose the problem my self without spending all kinds of money. also where can i find a diagram of the evap...

Did they explain the fuel evap test to you and what may have caused you to fail? Most smog tests that I've dealt with only test your gas cap and don't actually test your evap system itself. Gas cap is part of your evap system so when the cap fails, you automatically fail your evap system test even though they don't actually test it.

I recommend replacing your gas cap and giving it another shot as the cap will cost $10 to $20...

Unable to pass smog test, what to do

You just have to drive it . If you have more than 3/4 of a tank of fuel in it so the evap will run. All the others will run after is has fully warmed up.

Evap Sys Monitor

if evap is the only monitor that hasn't set yet, the car should still pass, a car is allowed to have 1 monitor that isn't set and still pass as long as the check engine light isn't on. take it in for the emissions, it should pass.
