Question about 1987 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

Overheating, fans won't turn on.

I have an 87 prelude SI 2.0 and it acts like it's cold outside and revs the engine high and overheats after ten minutes of driving. I changed the thermostat and still it's being stupid. I bottomed it out while camping and thats when I noticed it, any solutions?

Yeah I looked under the car and can't see anything wrong with it other than its confusing as hell, and now the battery is dying almost instantly after I shut the car off, so I think I'll just toss the thing away, because I hate that car and it has caused me nothing but trouble. I appriciate the help though.

Van keeps shutting off on its own and overheating

you mean the engine, overheats then the engines stalls.?
that latter symptom is normal for overheating.

(some exceptions, ) my Corvette drops cylinders, 1 by 1 to stop
this.(but is still bad , if this happens)

does it overheat only stopped, only moving or both? (KEY question)

fix the over heat, cause. there are may ways to overheat.
from simple to comlex. and no web bunny on earth can guess it.
unseen.
ill list the simple:
1: low on coolant, no not the side tank, the actual rad is low,
check only on dead cold engine, below 125F (AZ temp)
2: bad RAD cap. not holding pressure.
3: wrong coolant mix or mixing 1 color coolant with another (bad)
4: water pump belt bad , or slipping or missing.
5: rad tubes clogged
6: fan dead,
7: RAD outside ofcore, blocked with filth.
8: blown head gasket,(or far worse)
9: bad water pump.
10: leaks anywhere, (this really is first)

1996 ford probe is overheating, the fan won't come on

You have one of these:

- Blown fan Fusible
- Blown fan Motor
- Water temp sensor is shot

i won't say Blown headgasket or too low coolant level on the system because you have the fan not starting at all. that the root of the problem, do your engine overheats at high speeds? highway?

I have an 86 honda prelude 2.0si and Once my prelude is warmed up and I shut it off it won't start back up for at least another 30min to an hour. I got a new relay sensor, new distributor and timing...

I use to own an 88 prelude,2.0 engine also, had quite a few problems with it,how many miles does the engine have?hopefully u have had the timing belt replaced at about 60,000 miles I pd.someone to do that, bought the part, etc.,they hadnt done the job,and mine broke,it has an interferance engine, and basically had to have the whole head rebuilt, was never the same, but also how long do u warm it up for?only needs about 5-10min.to do that.,do u know how high the idle is set for?should be about 1-2 r.p.m.'s,on the tachometer, and should be just a little above the cold reading on the engine temp.gauge.sorry for all these ?., also when u let it sit and warm up too long,it can heat up the engine, and it may be trying to cool down, before wanting to start again.do the cooling fans automatically come on? are u saying it won't even turn over,or act like its going to and just doesnt turn over to a full start?it may be the ignition switch?if there is a ck.eng.lite on,u can hook up a tester to the computer's connection, and it will tell u what the code is ,then look up the code in the auto manual,to find the reason and the explanation for the code, and the hopeful solution to it.i know thats alot of info.to think about.maybe it helped ?

I have a Prelude '97. It overheats. I replaced the readiator, water pump, and one of the fans, but it still overheats when going uphill or when in slow traffic. I've noticed that the fan that is...

will try to help. the fan you replaced, was it the air conditioner fan? if so. then you need to check your primary fan. the one that does come on when the engine reaches operating temperature. make sure by starting engine, let the motor run and the temperature guage reaches the normal operating temperature.if the main engine cooling fan does'nt come on, then you'll need to check the fuse box under the hood. relays are black square plug in's they are marked and will[fan relays] tick when you turn the key on] if main engine fan does not come on when engine overheats, #1 fuse blown #2 relay bad #3 main cooling engine fan bad. note; the air conditioning fan will come on with engine running, when air conditioniing is turned on. when the a/c is turned off, the a/c fan will not be turning. hope this helps and as always, thank you for choosing fixya.com

i cannot specifically point out what the problem might be, but an overheating car---never a good thing. check everything related to cooling. fans, radiator, hoses, waterpump, coolant overflow tank(see if its got a brownish color or looks like there is oil), and check your oil while your at it...

I would suggest to check to make sure the fan is not on backwards. I dont know if its possible to even put it on backwards. just check to make sure that the fan is pulling air thru the grill instead of blowing out the grill. Also look into the radiator and see if you can see any lime or sediment in the radiator tubes. It will be white in color.A small amount of scale on the inside of the tubes act as insulation, and keeps the coolant from contacting the tubes and transfering the heat to the tubes so the air passing across the radiator can carry it away. Just flushing the radiator wont remove the lime scale, the radiator would need to be remove and dissassembled and rodded out. I dont think you have a blown head gasket yeti,if it not blowing water out when its cold and you dont have any performance problems, runs fine, just overheats. You might try turning on the heater when it starts to overheat and turn the heater fan on high as it acts as a radiator and see if it cools down indicating the cooling capacity of the radiator is diminished

Overheating- smaller fan is fried would this cause it to overheat

Is it an hour idling? If you are overheating going down the road, this is either a thermostat, or a plugged radiator. The fan will contribute to overheating sitting still.

Overheating and no hot air from heater.

Leave rad cap off when starting from cold, turn heater(not defrost) on, and top up coolant in rad as you go, to about an inch or 2 from top of rad. Let engine run with cap off until your rad fan comes on & off 3 or 4 times. Every once in a while, rev engine slightly for 5-10 seconds to help bleed air out faster. After about 3 or 4th time fan comes on, you should be o.k. to put cap back on all the way & fill bottle to proper level. Heat should be there now. Give it a try & let me know how it goes.

most likely a thermostat because the pressure on the a\c will be high if engine is over heating or the fans are not kicking on (check fan relay)
