Question about 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

I have a 86 cutlass factory 307 62000 original miles and all the sudden it stays in high idle in park and when i drop it down to drive its hard and when im in drive it is still pretty high idleing

I own a similar model cutlass. Only mine likes to idle at around 1500-2000rpms then die as soon as I shift into gear. Still can't figure out exactly why, though. It will run fine so long as I keep my foot in it. Rides pretty smoothly, for a car of its age... And given i sat for almost a year before I purchased it.?.

The high idle cam is on full warm up probably because the choke pull off is not working or the flap is sticking

My 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme stays on fast idle, then when it does finally drop down, it 'thumps' into gear hard.


It`s probably the idle speed control sensor. I would also look into the last time the transmission filter and gasket was changed.

When I start the car it stays at 2000rpm for a few moments then drops down. I'll drive for a few minutes then put it in park and it revs up and down.


idle air control valve is bad replace it. at start up choke control runs till warm up while driving throttle opening controls engine at idle ,the idle air control valve.

Faulty idle air control valve.After you replace it you will need to reset the computer by disconnecting the ground cable on the battery for 30 seconds then re-install it and start it up it should run fine.

The Oxygen sensor is very suspect. it is easy to damage on install, even with the correct tool.

Put the old one back in and test the car...

Low idle


Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
