Difficult to say. If you are connecting the jumper cables to the battery posts, the only thing you are doing is boosting the voltage in the battery. A mechanic would check for voltage at the battery and the starter to check the cables.
sometimes a rubber mallet doesn't work on the stater, you actually have to hit it with something stronger, like a hammer while turning it over. If not check to see if you have a pro lock on your vehicle because if that becomes just a little loose it won't start.
