Question about 1989 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

I have a 1989 Ford Ranger with a Mazda Standard Transmission. The Reverse has gone out on the transmission. How difficult to replace this gear would it be or would I do better to find a transmission in a junk yard and put it in.

Well, to replace a gear in the trans, you need to be able to disassemble the trans. Apart is easier than reassembly. Gears are costly, and when one goes out there is also a mating gear that gets damaged, so that is two big parts. I suggest for the do it yourself guy, consider a wrecking yard trans.
The only down side is you may have to r&r an extra time, if trans is no good..., still worth it.
At our shop, we would often buy the wrecking yard trans and rebuild that, as the big parts add up so fast.

But, just get a used one, and not the cheepest, and get back on the road...for the least money.

It's the clutch or gears in the transmission. Not a cheap fix but cheaper than an automatic transmission.

I need to raise my engine on a ford ranger to replace the oil pump. I can't get the engine high enough. 1989, 2300cc, standard, no air

You'll need to unbolt the motor from the transmission to raise the engine enough to get the oil pump out.

1989 ford ranger automatic transmission

Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift, make sure you get the right one.Good luck.

The transmission will not operate in reverse or

hey, im not a professional but ive dealt with crappy a4ld's for about two years. just from what youve said it sounds to me like youre pump may have gone. it happened on my first one. if you remove the bellhousing it is directly behind it. there are 6 or so bolts. a new one can be purchased at cobra transmissions, however if the pump seems intact it could be a million other things. if i were you and you have some know how, buy a stick shift ranger and swap it out. its really not hard. if you have any questions email me at mcdonaldmowing@aol.com good luck

Manual transmission won't shift into reverse

Your reverse gear is worn down, unfortunately, you will have to get your reverse gear replaced, if the forward gears are working properly. if not, a new transmission (or rebuilt) will be necessary.

Transmission is gone. Get a new vehicle, or get a rebuilt tranny and swap it out.
