Could be due to electrical failure, Check battery connection is clean and secure.
Without running a diagnostic on car will be unsure to just guess what problem will be with if its not a battery problem.

Use voltage meter and try all in-car electrical's including radio see if any are causing voltage drop.

I was driving down the interstate and my car lost power. Rpms went down and died.. radio, air and everything else works will not start back but sounds like it is cranking.

Do you have normal compression, fuel pressure, and spark when cranking the engine ? Hopefully the timing belt did not break.

My 90 dakota 3.9 drives fine for three miles then backfires under hood restart it and drives fine

It could be a long list of things electrical, including the key switch, coil, and pickup module inside the distributor. Even the computer could do it.
Until it gets to the point where it will not start, you may not be able to find the source.
Have you checked the computer for trouble codes?

Engine cuts off

this is a hard one to fiqure out unless the vehicle does not starty at all because you have distinguish if it is gas or spark. The distributer has a module that may be breaking down. You have to remove the Dist cap and rotor to get to the module. It has two screws that hold in place using 1/4 inch nut driver to remove it. You can take it to oriellys and they can test it to see if it is good or bad. If you have a check engine light on you can take the truck to auto zone to see what codes are in the system. They will do this for no charge.
