Question about 1995 Audi 90

1 Answer

I'm thinking of buying a 1993 Audi, selling price is $500.00. I test drove the vehicle - nice ride and handling. The seller said that there was an oil leak, which she was putting in 1-11/2 quarts every couple weeks. I noticed after test-driving, that oil was dripping out of the tail pipe. There was no sign of a leak from the engine area on the ground where the car had been sitting. Any idea what's going on and why the car is using so much oil?

Oil out of the exhaust would mean worn rings, worn valve stem seals or both. This would usually be accompanied by white smoke exiting the tailpipe. (mileage in the region of 100000miles plus??) Another explanation could be a cracked cylider head.
Repair entails an engine rebuild/replacement on all 3 possibilities. If you have a backyard mechanic handy you could always swop out the old engine with something from a breaker's yard although that presents a whole new set of problems as you never really know what you get.

Testimonial: "Thanks - very, very helpful. The price selling price sounded a little fishy and the Audi has 185,000 miles. At least the woman was honest:)"

What should I be asking the seller when I'm buying and Audi A6 2.0 L TDI with 80K miles as part of my due diligence ??

The first question will be why are you selling it and the second question will be can I see your maintenance records. I love Audi but they are expensive when it comes to some repairs. Therefore if it is a dealer you are buying from ask about the warranty, if a private seller then you can purchase a warranty. I would go to a trusted mechanic and ask him to give you the names of a few warranty companies that offer good service. Also I would like to get a second opinion on the car from that same mechanic if any doubts linger about what you are buying. Also you may purchase a vehicle histiry report from Auto Check or a company like that. They will give you a report of any accidents etc. on the car. Hope this helps.

He should have all the service receipts, ask for them. A friend had expensive problems with his transmission. Remember, he wants to sell it to you rather than you want to buy it from him. Keep the power on your side and don't be afraid to offer a really low price. You'll hear one of two answers: yes or no. Its not the last beemer anyway.

30mph beep

It means the current owner has set a speed warning, this can be set to beep at nearly any speed. It can be done through the vehicle following the owners manual. It is normal and more importantly can be turned off.

Electrical problem 1993 Audi 90 CS

The 1993 90 instrument cluster is very sensitive.  Even having bulbs out can mess it up.  You should consider replacing the ignition switch.  It is easy you can do it yourself, do NOT let Audi dealer's service tell you it's $500 to do it.  You can get the part for less than 30 bucks on ebay.  Undo the screws under the steering wheel, take off the plastic, take out the 2 screws on the instrument cluster, take out the cluster enough to see the ignition switch.  THis is the tricky part:  get a small screw driver and LOOSEN the small screws that keep the ignition switch in place.Replace.  Re-tighten, put it all back and you're done.
Ignition switch is EVERYTHING in this car.  Oh, do not by the switch with the pink plastic where the key would go, buy the WHITE.
