Overheating, and it is not the thermostat. Is this a common problem?

Water pump?
I have had bad thermostats brand new out of the box. Before I put in a "new" thermostat, I put it in a pot with a few cups of water in it. Heat water to opening temp. (ie. 160) degrees using a bakers thermometer. Make sure the stat is opening at, or close to this temperature. Next step is to determine if your waterpump is working. You can look up how to do this or bring it to a reputable shop.

This is a complex job. You could try and get the Hanyes manual. Because, if you make a bad adjustment, the engine is totalled!

In the meantime, you put in a new timing-belt, water-pump, and torque the head. The Crank-pulley and the cam-sproket must be lined up in proper positions. That's why you need a good manual.

Eclipse has gas but wont start up

it has gas but does it have fuel pressure? try spraying a little starting fluid into the intake at the throttle valve, if it starts u have a pressure problem and a possible defective electric fuel pump.

well get ready cuz ur not gonna like it in order to change the water pump you must remove the top left motor mount then remove all the belts and plastic covers you can get to then pull the harmonic balancer and acc belt tensioner then then remove the rest of the plastic covers take off the timing belt and tensioner pulley assembly then u can remove the water pump install is reverse of tear down but make sure you get the block clean and replace the timing belt too otherwise that water pump wont matter cuz you'll meed a new enginge when that belt breaks

My 98 eclipse is making a screeching noise in the engine

1.Most likely alternator belt is not tight enough or need new one.2. A/C-Power steering belt is loose or need new one. 3. Bearing in A/C-Power Steering Tensioner is going bad. 4. Not the water pump unless you are loosing water all the time. Timing belt runs the water pump & you need to tear down the engine. If so ,you would need to replace the timingbelt, tensioners, and maybe the hydraulic tensioner. NOT FOR $300, more like 5-600. Get yourself a Haynes Manual for 95-99 Eclipse at AUTOZONE,Advanced Auto, or Pep Boys and read up on this.
