It should be 45-65 psi .... 15 psi is not enough.

Fuel pump pulsing when i turn key on


Well the pump would not be able to flood the engine unless the pressure regulator failed or one of the injectors was stuck open.
Have you checked the regulator and injectors ? The pump relay should power the pump for 3 seconds when you turn the key switch on, and you should have around 40psi of fuel pressure in the injector line.

The pump is powered by the relay. The relay is grounded by the computer. It gets a ground signal for the first 3 seconds, then only if the computer sees oil pressure or RPM to know the engine is running.
You should be able to ground the relay and run the pump for several minutes. After 30 seconds you should be at max pressure.
Normal pressure is 15psi for a truck that has throttle body injectors such as a mid 80s model, and 65psi for trucks that have port fuel injection like yours.
You may have the wrong pump.

I would check the fuel pump relay first. You should have some fuel pressure in the lines when you turn the key on. The relay is powered for 3 seconds to boost pressure until the engine starts.
The relay may not be working or the check valve in the pump may be letting fuel back into the tank which would cause the pressure to drop to zero when the engine is off. You should have at least 15psi with a TBI system and 35psi with MFI.

Fuel pumps not working. Have changed eec relay, fuel pump relay, checked fuse and inercia switch not triped. Any suggestions?


When you turn the key to "ON', or "START" the fuel pump should run just enough to pressurize the system, and shut off. When engine is actually started, the pump will run continuously. Sounds like the pump relay is not getting the signal to run the pump from the key being turned to "on" or "start". Also, some vehicles can sense fuel pressure so there may be an issue with that sensor as well. In other words it thinks there is proper pressure or maybe too much pressure and wont let the pump run. I am curious to know what you find.

check the fuel pump, it sounds like as it sits its losing pressure, when you first turn the key to the on ( not start) do you hear the fuel pump running then shut off? your fuel pump should keep pressure on the line at all times, so if you do hear the pump start it should be a very brief spurt and thats it, you can have the pressure checked at many repair shops for free or low charge,

Cranks for 30-45 secs and then starts when cold


Check fuel pressure prior to starting truck when cold. If there is no pressure in the system what is happening is that your check valve in the fuel pump has gone bad and allowing fuel pressure to relieve itself back into the tank. This causes a large air bubble in the fuel line that can take quite sometime to purge before it starts when fuel reaches the throttle body, which explains your long crank hard start.

If you have no means to check pressure you can also remove the air cleaner and look into the top of the throttle body while an assistant attempts to start the truck when cold. You should see fuel instantly if you do not your pump is failing to hold system pressure.

If your system is failing to hold pressure between starts the remedy is to replace the fuel pump.

Turns over but wont start


If you don't hear it then it is probably not working.  One way you can check is to take a fuel line apart and see if fuel comes out when you turn the key.  The best place to do that is at the fuel filter.  Just make sure you have a small cup to catch the fuel if it comes out.  Hope this helps.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

99 dodge 2500 5.9 cummins fuel pressure at 3psi


The 3 psi is caused by a failed transfer pump. The problem the loss of could be the VP44 injection pump. This pump should be run at min 7psi. I had the same fuel pressure problem. I replaced my stock transfer pump with a FASS DDRP from www.usdieselparts.com. The stock pump is over $200 to replace and will fail again, sometimes right out of the box. The DDRP will supply about 15psi to the pump and is simple to install. I hope this helps.
