Question about 1992 Cadillac Seville

Open Question

Hi, my 92 Seville 4.9 started running rough on a cold start this morning (10-14-10). It feels as though it is not firing on all cylinders. It is driveable, but has loss of normal smooth power and on the freeway it surges continually as if it is running properly for a few seconds and then back to misfiring. This problem occurred suddenly - the car was running perfectly when I parked it the night before. Thanks!

SOURCE: 1999 Cadillac Catera - 103,000 miles - cranks but no fire

Hello carol...from the symptons you describe more than likely it's the CPS (crankshaft position sensor.)
The CPS is a common problem on Cateras with these symptoms.
The sensor is a magnetic impulse type that sends a signal to the computer, the computer then triggers the fire signal. When the CPS gets weak, dirty or has low voltage the intermitten no starts occur. It will finally result in a no start at all...Please be aware that a lot of caddy dealers will and have overcharged customers for this common problem by ill advise and replaceing uneeded componets.
Good luck...i hope this helps and will fixya up.

Pull the dist. cap of and inspect rotor and contacts. If the rotor has a lot of graphite dust in the center this may cause the coil to fire at more than one cylinder and cause the module to over heat for just a moment. Just fixed a gm truck that was doing this. Cap and rotor.

Truck runs rough

Sounds like one of your chambers isn't firing. Run your car for a few minutes, shut it off then pull your plugs one at a time and see if one of them is wet. Might just need a new plug.
