To check both fans work at high temps put a sheet of card over the rad to block off airflow and run engine till hot, keeping an eye on when they both start (one is set at a lower temp than the other),if the second fan dont start when the engine is really hot THEN you have a problem.....

SS w/3.8l engine. What would cause the first electric fan not run but when temp rises the second fan will come on?

The coolant fan should kick on when temp reaches 192 degrees. Have you changed your thermostat? The 2nd fan is for the a/c. If car is running hot, it's probably thermostat or cooling fan

How do I get my cooling fans to turn on ?

Some makes and models, if you unplug the coolant temp sensor, the fan/s will run. Sometimes if you turn on ac the fans will run.
Have you done any diagnostics? Any applicable trouble codes?
How about checking applicable fuses--voltage and ground circuits for the fan?

My monte carlo overeheats and shuts down. Why?

The shut down may be a result of the PCM seeing the vehicle overheating and doing this for protection.

Make sure your cooling system is full

Check that the engine fan is working. It may get to a high temp before it turns on. You can also turn on the AC if it works and that will turn the fan on (may take a bit as some respond to system pressure). But that will just tell if the fan and relay work, not if the temp sensor is working.

Swap the relay for another, (A/C for fan)

Does the expansion tank get full and/or coolant forced out of the system? May have blown head gasket causing combustion to force the coolant out of the system.

Thermostat may be stuck.

Water pump impeler may be bad

I have 2005 monte carlo it keeps over heating the cooling fans are not comming on I replaced the relays and its still over heating and I can't find the heat senser any help

The coolant temp sensor is on the thermostat housing at the back of the engine. See pictures below. Try taking the connector off the sensor--this should turn the fans on. If not, you may have a problem with power distribution to the fans. You can interrogate the relay sockets to verify that the PCM is sending a signal to turn the fans on. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check on how to interrogate the relays. The PCM signal is a ground signal, so one of the socket terminals should be dead until the engine is hot--then it should become a ground. I have pasted the wiring diagrams below, but resolution on FixYa is not great. Please let me know if you have any questions.

RADIATOR FAN IS NOT WORKING

If relay and fan fuse are good, disconnect coolant temp. sensor, sensor will be on thermostat housing or just below it, fan should come on right away, if it does replace sensor, if it don't check voltage at cooling fan harness with sensor disconnected, if you have voltage there replace cooling fan assembly.

1995 Monte carlo both fans don't work and it runs hot help put new thermostat in and fan motor now what

Try unplugging the coolant temperature sensor and see if the fans come on.If they do then the coolant temp sensor needs to replaced. The sensor is located in the intake manifold by the upper radiator hose. Here is a link to provide a general location http://www.greatautohelp.com/sensor-location/3400.html

1999 3.1L V6 Monte Carlo: Had the engine replaced. Now the dual cooling fans do not come on when the engine heats up as before. They only come on now when the A/C is running. How do I get this corrected so...

The fans are controlled by the ECM.they will not normally come on untill about 235 degrees.Have someone put a scan tool on your car,run it and see how hot it gets.Your new engine may a different coolant sensor, which changed the reading on your gauge.

Cooling fans wont turn on

Hello. I understand your frustrations as I too own a 2001 monte carlo and have had the same problem...along with several others. My engine temp gauge would show ZERO degrees because of the bad coolant temp sensor. So I replaced it with one from autozone (BIG MISTAKE) The one from autozone was **** and gave the car a different problem. The fans would not run while the engine was running and would run when the engine was off until the battery rundown protector would shut them down. this lasted about 2 weeks during which I had to keep my heater on (in the middle of summer) to keep my car from over heating because my fans wouldnt run. The autozone jerks said "if my temp gauge was working then the sensor was doing its job" and that "there is another problem" Well I finally called the dealership and they told me that autozone is junk and to try advance auto parts and to get the next one up from the cheapest...this is what they use...and NASCAR uses. It was a few dollars more (around $25) Problem solved. However a few months later the cooling fans went completly out..this was due to them experiencing such high temperatures for 2 weeks. I replaced them with ones from a salvage yard for $50. Dont let this happen to you...

95 grand am radiator fan only runs with AC on

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.
I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson
