They say that a in a lot of cases when the belt is behind the pump its to save labor cost it all depends on how many miles are on the belt i think 50,000 is the avg for those if you have more than than 75,000 its not a bad idea and it can save you the stress of it breaking and paying the labor twice

What all should I replace while replacing the water Pump on my 2000 ford contour

That's a very good question...but I gather that this car has been taken care of and should be in very good shape and with economy the way it is..I see no reason to get a new car...My advice..Just get the water pump replaced and happy motoring....and don't let any mechanic try to sell you something that you don't need...I'm sure that you've heard the expression"If it ain't broke...don't fix it."..I hope this was heplful...PEACE.....

In replacing a water pump in a 1997 ford coutour, the book i have says to remove the timing belt, 1. i cant find any cam marks to keep things aligned 2. any good ideas on how to loosen the crank pulley...

they dont have marks, we at the dealership use a special tool. you can make your own marks. if you reuse the timing belt make sure that you mark the direction, crank pully bolt you can get a chain wrench from auto zone that will wrap around the pulley and lock down to hold it. i have used this when an impact wasnt handy.

Water pump

HELLO THERE, YOUR WATER PUMP IS UNDER YOUR TIMING BELT THAT IS ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE WHERE YOUR BELTS ARE. UNDER THE FRONT COVER(.HINT) IF YOU NEED A TIMING BELT CHANGED WHICH SHOULD BE CHANGED EVERY 80,000 MILES YOU CAN GET THE WATER PUMP INSTALLED FOR FREE THE MECHANIC IS ALREADY THERE ANYWAY.WHEN HE IS DOING THE TIMING BELT.

My 04 chevy aveo just had the timing belt and water pump replaced, and then the mechanic said 2 of the 4 cylinders were bad and the vlaves were bent. does that happen?

I just wanna know how was it possible for him to know the (hidden under the cylinder head cover) valves were bent while only changing the timing belt and water pump ( both located at the side of the engine).

95 ford contour idles low and shuts off when slowing or stopping. i also think i have a coolant leak. i am scared that a mechanic will screw me over because i don't know anything about cars. please help!

You're probably gonna have to get your timing belt replaced and while you're at it get your water pump replaced. Also tell them to check your cooling system for leaks.

I need instructions on replacing the timing belt

1. Remove the Alternator Belt.
2. Remove the Water Pump Pulley
3. Remove the Air Conditioner Belt and Power Steering Belt.
4. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley.
5. Remove the timing belt cover
6. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.
7. Remove the Timing Belt.
8. (If Replacing) Remove Idler Pulley.
Installation is reverse of removal. Keep a close eye on the timing marks on the cam sprockets to make sure you don't knock anything out of whack.

I would strongly recommend replacing the water pump while you are replacing the timing belt. (The water pump usually comes in the timing belt kit.) Otherwise you are going to have to do this all over again when your water pump goes out. Good Luck.

1. Drain the coolant and disconnect the coolant outlet pipe connection hose from the coolant pump. 2. Remove the drive belt and engine coolant pump pulley. 3. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt idler. 4. Remove the coolant pump mounting bolts, then remove the generator brace. 5. Remove the coolant pump assembly from the cylinder block.
