Question about 2001 Toyota Camry

2 Answers

We replaced a battery that was found to be defective, 2 hours later the car starts fine but the dash lights are out and the car will not shift out of park. Is it the fuse? When the battery was dead the car also would not shift out of park, could a blown fuse affect the transmission?

The gate lock that prevents from shifting out of park if brake is not depressed works electrically. If no electricity, the gate doesn't work. Make sure that the voltage regulator is limiting voltage output to no more than 14 volts or so. If the voltage regulator is defective, and allowing high voltage into the vehicle circuit, it will burn all sorts of bulbs, dash lights, radio lights AND batteries. Maybe the battery died from receiving too much voltage from the alternator to begin with.

In spite of what Firestone did it still sounds like you have a defective speed sensor. Other people have also had this problem and it was solved by replacing the speed sensor.

I hope it resolves your problem.

Would begin by replacing car battery and if it starts, check for codes. If no scan tool available, drive to closest auto parts store that can check this at no charge.

That symbol means low voltage in the system, you have a dead or defective battery. These new sealed batteries can go out of the blue, starts fine and then a few minutes or hours later nothing, no crank no start. You can confirm the battery is the problem by honking the horn, it will dribble out a noise or not work at all if the battery is dead or nearly dead.

check/clean battery terminals, if ok check starter wires for voltage(while turning key to start) and tightening or corrosion. If all check out ok replace the starter. If you have no voltage at the starter check your relays and ignition switch. Hopefully this helps

Intermittently have to use charger to start.

the most common cause of this by far is lights left on by defective switchs, these include the map lights in the visors, the glove box light due to a defective switch, the trunk light and the hood light if equipped, check it at night and look for a faint glow, the other much less common cause is the alternator has a defective diode and allows a small current to pass to ground drawing the battery down..

Depends on if the vehicle is a automatic transmission or a Stick shift. If it is an automatic could be the neutral safety switch, if it is a stick shift could be the safety switch at the clutch pedal. Hope this helps.
