Question about 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

My 2001 4x4 1500 Chevy Suburban with 249,000 miles is making a loud ticking noise intermittently, it mostly happens at stop lights, sometimes while just driving, but most especially when I start it in the morning. The oil pressure light and gauge show low to zero oil pressure, what causes this and what is the average going rate for a "reputable" mechanic to fix it? Thank in advance for the help!

Clicking is caused by lack of oil in the hydraulic lifters. If the car has had regular oil changes, the problem is probably the oil pump. If not, the engine may be shot with this much mileage. The part is $150 at autozone, but a shop may charge more. The labor for this job is about a day, so the total can easily be $600-900. If you have more questions, please let me know.

I'm a bit more experienced with older car models but when these things happen I immediately suspect the sensors/sensor-wiring within the axle because they are most receptable to damage. If the oil light and the gauge is showing low to zero pressure then you need to have the pressure checked by someone with a mechanical gauge to varify the pressure is low. Is the oil level at the full mark? I have seen where the oil pickup tube o ring gets hard over time and cracks which can allow the oil pump to draw in air and cause low oil pressure. If you run the engine with very low oil pressure for any length of time there is a chance that the engine may need to be replaced due to lack of lubrication. The chevrolet dealerships still provide very good service. Hope this helps.

Loud ticking sound all of the time

Are you sure its not an exhaust leak ..? They can sometimes sound like a ticking noise and the noise will change with temperatures of engine.. ? also if you can borrow a stethicope from someone which is used in automotive repair alot (different than what your doctor uses) this will help you pinpoint the problem .. It sounds to me with out hearing it you have a loose rocker arm possably .. If this is the case this is a easy fix and very inexpensive. just figure which side its coming from take the valve cover off and tighten it till it stops ticking and then give it 1/4 turn. Holler if you need more Jerry

1999 Chevy Suburban K1500 Transmission problems

Possible that it was damaged before and was over looked, or the transmission was not installed flush against the back of the engine block before the torque converter bolts were attached to the flexplate causing an abnormal wear and excessive stress causing it to break.
