Need to know what wires go where on a 1999 ford f-150 truck starter

The return spring on the bendix has broken or the helix is so dirty, that the bendix is stuck.

Lets review what you said. I am assuming you mean the engine will not crank.
Do you have power to the main starter wire, and the smaller wire when the key switch is in the start position ?
Do the headlights and dash warning lights work ?

Should only be a cable from the solenoid on the fender to the starter.

YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION OUT OF 93 OR 94 FORD 150 THE 1999 FOR 150 HAD A 4.2 - 4.6 AND A 5.4 ENGINE.YOU MORE LIKELY GOT TRANSMISSION FOR A 5.4 ENGINE.1993 TO 1999 THATS A 6 YEAR DIFFERENCE.TRANSMISSION NOT GOING TO WORK.YOUR TRANSMISSION WIRING HOOK UP IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT.

The field wire to the starter has a small eyelet connector that connects to the small terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "S").

All other wires have a large eyelet connector and they are all connected together with the battery cable to the large terminal on the starter solenoid (sometimes marked "BAT").

Sometimes the field wire to the starter is a push on type connector, and there would only be one obvious terminal on the starter solenoid that it could be connected to.

Put it all back together like you take it apart.

if it didn't shake before the starter change,and the black marks were not there before,you need to see if the positive cable is getting hot to the touch,double check the large battery cables going to starter that they are on correctly ,dont go by color of wire ,visually follow each wire to starter to make sure its a ground or hot one,last possibility
would be a dead short in starter.

typically, there are three possible connections at the starter. viewing the solenoid from the connection side, there are connections at 12 and 6 o'clock. (battery in and starter out) , and one or two smaller connections.

The connection at the 2 o'clock position energizes the solenoin and the one at 10 o'clock provides ingition resistor bypass, during starting.

Sometimes there is more than one wire hooked up to the 12 o'clock position...

And be sure to disconnect the battery negative connection, but you knew that, correct?

To my knowledge, you assumption is correct on most designs. That wire should go to the ignition switch and will be hot when key is in START. However, same wire often would be connected first to a relay that is interlocked with some conditions/status other then key to START. They would be:

• automatic transmission should be in neutral/park with light indicated;
• alarm/security/immobilizer is inactive/OFF.
