Question about 1987 Ford F 150

1 Answer

I have a 1987 ford f-150 2 wheel drive 5.0 with a c4 transmission, and when then engine is under load (going up hills, accelerating hard) i hear this loud clicking or ticking noise. Could this be a bad flexplate or torque converter? I havent noticed any real signs that torque converter is going bad (no unusually high reving or anything).

What engine computer fault codes do you have, if you have not done scan for fault codes do that. Also check fuel pressure under a load.

Since it is so old, Start with a compression test. 90lbs is about minimal. The cylinders should be with in 10% of each other. If your there or lower, Time to retire or rebuild this engine. This part here will save you time, trouble and money into an engine that won't be any better when your done.

Leaky muffler type sound from engine when under a load

check for a leaking manifold gasket or cracked manifold. If it is a front wheel drive car there may be a flexible bit near the engine to allow the engine to move in the mounts . This bit of flexible exhaust is known to crack under the brading.

Heard a clunk while driving diesel ford excursion now when drive and reverse don't work....any ideas what problem is?

If it is a four wheel drive check your tail shaft or drive line by securing the vehicles front wheels jack up the rear tires and in park try to rotate the drive line if you can hear the transmission sound like it is going into gear the transfer case could be damaged! If not a four wheel drive pull the transmission dipstick and look to see if the fluid is dark red or metallic grayish color if so then you're clutch disks inside the tyranny have been worn out and it needs to be rebuilt!

2006 Hyundai Elantra with 2.0 automatic with 111000 miles. Car is hesitating and begins shaking going up steep hills. Problem seems the worst at around 3000 rpm going up hill. The car wont stop shaking...

There's many reasons this can happen, but start simple. Fuel pump may be failing. Usually under load they can not supply the fuel the engine is demanding. (Up hill acceleration is a classic example). change the fuel filter first, if that doesn't not correct the problem, test fuel system pressure. (:

1987 Topaz, has trouble accelerating.

Most likely it is a transmission problem. Being that old the transmission needs work and possibly the clutch replaced or Throw-out bearing.

I have a 1987 ford f-150 with a 302. I would like to put the 302 into a 1989 ford f-150 that is four wheel drive that currently has a 4.9 in it. would there be any problems with doing this.

302 is a 5.0L v8 engine and 4.9 is a 300ci, 6 cylinder. so you may have problem with transmission, exhaust manifold, motor mounts, vacuum lines/hose, radiator, power steering pump, a/c system, and mostly wirings. not to mention there is a computer in those trucks!
