The first thing you need to do with this car is have it scanned for error codes. Autozone will do this for free and their OBD diagnostic scanner will retrieve any error codes stored in the vehicles ECU.
The reason for this is that an intermittent fault like this is very typical of a faulty engine sensor. The working diagnosis given your description, is extremely typical of a faulty crankshaft sensor.
However, it is extremely important to have the error codes checked with the OBD scanner to prevent throwing money at the problem with the incorrect replacement components. There are other potential causes for this behaviour but a faulty crankshaft sensor is the most likely fault.
The error codes will confirm this to be the fault or point to the offending component with more certainty.
