Hi,

The first thing you need to do with this car is have it scanned for error codes. Autozone will do this for free and their OBD diagnostic scanner will retrieve any error codes stored in the vehicles ECU.

The reason for this is that an intermittent fault like this is very typical of a faulty engine sensor. The working diagnosis given your description, is extremely typical of a faulty crankshaft sensor.

However, it is extremely important to have the error codes checked with the OBD scanner to prevent throwing money at the problem with the incorrect replacement components. There are other potential causes for this behaviour but a faulty crankshaft sensor is the most likely fault.

The error codes will confirm this to be the fault or point to the offending component with more certainty.

Thanks for using FixYa. Please do leave a vote for the solution.

My car is sputtering and dying. If I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a while an hour or so it will start up and drive fine.

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.

Car cutting off

If you have no trouble lights and the car is displaying these kind of problems, why don't you return the car for repair ?

I would bring the car to a auto zone and have them but the car on the computer for a diagnostic check.

Also, if the car will not start after running, does it back fire or seem like its being choked out ?
Could be a fuel problem or restriction. ( FPR, Fuel Pump, Filter ect.

Car will not start randomly

On these early 90's GM vehicles, the antitheft system is known to fail. When this happens, it cuts power to starter for up to ten minutes.

When driving suddenly the engine cuts out.

I heave the same problem on my Corsa B 1.0 2000, engine cuts out, and whe it happens, I hear one of the relay under the right side of the dash buzzing. After a couple of minutes, starts like nothing happend.
So far I manage to find that the speed sensor is faulty, when I tap him the car stops. I order a brand new one, but I'm not sure that was the issue.
I order also a Opel Tech2 tester from ebay and it has to arrive next week, then I can see the error code.

2001 Buick Regal cuts off while driving at times also won't start

The ignition switch on that model is rated @ 50amps. When I was driving my 2001 Regal LS (at 120,000 miles) and used the turn signal, the engine would die, when I switched the turn signal off, the engine ran. So I replaced the ignition switch, and all is well.
