REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L Engines
See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Remove the timing cover. This will allow access to the timing chain.
  2. Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are nearest each other and in line between the shaft centers.

Fig. Fig. 1: Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are in line

  1. On 1996-98 vehicles remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring, if equipped. On 7.4L engines tool J-41371 or its equivalent puller must be used to remove the reluctor ring.
  2. Take out the bolts that hold the camshaft gear to the camshaft. This gear is a light press fit on the camshaft and will come off easily. It is located by a dowel. The chain comes off with the camshaft gear.

Fig. Fig. 3: Remove the camshaft gear and timing chain
A gear puller will be required to remove the crankshaft gear.
To install:

  1. Without disturbing the position of the engine, mount the new crankshaft gear on the shaft, and mount the chain over the camshaft gear. Arrange the camshaft gear in such a way that the timing marks will line up between the shaft centers and the camshaft locating dowel will enter the dowel hole in the cam sprocket.
  2. Place the cam sprocket, with its chain mounted over it, in position on the front of the truck and pull up with the three bolts that hold it to the camshaft.
  3. After the gears are in place, turn the engine two full revolutions to make certain that the timing marks are in correct alignment between the shaft centers. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts (and nut on the 4.3L) to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 18 ft. Lbs. (25 Nm). On the 7.4L, tighten them to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 25 ft. Lbs. (34 Nm).

When installing the crankshaft position sensor you must use install a new oil ring seal onto the sensor.
  1. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring (if equipped), onto the crankshaft until it is firmly seated against the crankshaft sprocket. On 1996-98 7.4L vehicles replace the reluctor ring with a new component.
  2. Install the front cover, torsional damper, water pump and the radiator.

Changed cyl head, on 1996 2.2 toyota camry, cant seem to figure out cam timing

there is a hole in the camshaft gear turn the gear until it lines up with a mark in the cylinder head at the top. then line the crankshaft gear mark up with the mark on the block. sometimes the best way to see the camshaft timing mark is with a mirror.

Hi ive got a 1996 isuzu bighorn ive attempted to change the timing belt but the injector pump pulley moved when i took the belt off. i put it back where i thort it was and tried a tooth either way but no...

Timing belt installation

1. Ensure locking bolts located correctly [4] & [5] in the picture below:

tdisline_32.jpg
CS = Crankshaft
CA = Camshaft
IP = Injection Pump

2. Ensure timing marks aligned [10].
3. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket.

NOTE: "ISUZU" lettering on belt should be readable from front of engine.

4. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [9]. Push tensioner pulley against belt.
5. Ensure belt is taut between injection pump sprocket and tensioner pulley as well as crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
6. Position tensioner lever [8] against tensioner pulley housing.
7. Remove locking bolts from sprockets [4] & [5].
8. Apply a load of 10 ... 12 kg to tensioner lever. Use spring balance [11].
9. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 80 Nm.
10. Turn crankshaft slowly 45 degrees anti-clockwise. Use spring balance to tension belt.
11. Repeat tensioning procedure at 45 degrees intervals for one anti-clockwise turn of the crankshaft.

NOTE: DO NOT turn crankshaft clockwise during tensioning procedure!

12. Fit tensioner lever to original position. Tighten nuts [12].
13. Install: Injection Pump flange [6], Camshaft sprocket flange [7], and water pump pulley.
14. Install components in reverse order of removal & refill coolant.

Got audi a4 1996 diesel need to change cambelt but

A diesel uses a different procedure. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulley parallel to the top of the cylinder head. The timing mark to set TDC for piston #1 is located on top of bell housing. The pointer must be aligned on the diamond cut on the flywheel. A VW/Audi setting bar tool #2065A is needed to lock the camshaft in position. Lock the injection pumpin position using the special lock pin (VW/Audi special tool no. 2064). Caution: If the drive belt is broken or has jumped time, do not attempt to lock the sprocket at this time!!! You will also need VW/Audi special tool no. VW210 to measure belt tension between camshaft sproket and injection pump sprocket. So good luck.

0900c152800a727b.jpg enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif Fig. Fig. 1: The crankshaft and camshaft sprocket marks must be aligned prior to timing chain removal To install:

  1. Install crankshaft sprocket back onto the crankshaft using tool J 5590 or equivalent installation tool.
  2. Compress the tensioner spring, and using a suitable tool (such as a cotter pin or nail), insert the tool into the hole (A) as shown in the accompanying figure.

0900c152800a727e.jpg enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif Fig. Fig. 4: Location to insert the pin in the timing chain tensioner
  1. Install the timing chain tensioner and retaining bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
  2. Align the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks with the tab on the tensioner.
  3. Install the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket and then around the crankshaft sprocket. Make sure that the marks on the two sprockets are in alignment (see illustration). Lubricate the thrust surface with Molykote® or its equivalent.
  4. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the sprocket and then install the sprocket onto the camshaft. Use the mounting bolt(s) to draw the sprocket onto the camshaft and then tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  5. Lubricate the timing chain with clean engine oil. Tighten the tensioner retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6. Remove the tool used to compress the tensioner spring.
  7. Install the timing chain front cover.
  8. Fill the cooling system and crankcase with the proper types and amounts of fluids.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks. Check the fluid levels and add if necessary.
