Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

1996 Dodge Intrepid 3.3L Injected When I try to start my Intrepid, it turns but wont turn over. If you spray starting fluid in the intake, it will turn over, and then die when the fluid runs out. If you pump the gas while starting it, after spraying starting fluid, it will run, but you have to keep pumping the gas to keep it running. After you get it running, and pump a while, it will eventually even out, and idle, but if you stop pumping too soon, it will die. Once it will idle, if you shift into gear, it will rev down, and almost always die. I have checked all of the spark plugs, and wires, and there is spark in both. I recently put in a new fuel pump and have changed the filter. Any ideas? Maybe the regulator?

after lookin at the fuel pump, the arrow is not aligned between the marks on the car, will this alone stop it from functioning correctly? Also what about a gasket? Im not sure if it's in there, but i dont remember replacing it, will that cause these problems?

Well you narrowed it down to a fuel problem. not sure about your model, but most cars have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to reduce un needed pressures. that could possibly be bad. its cylinder in shape and has a vacuum hose connected to it. check the hose and that unit.

2000 dodge intrepid wont stay running

Have fuel pressure tested in both situations. I've seen fuel pumps quit once they get heated up, then when they cool, pump again. Perhaps try WD40 sprayed in to throttle body inlet when no start, and that will tell you if it's a fuel delivery problem. Just remove air cleaner intake hose at front of throttle body, and open throttle and spray for a second or 2 then try to start. If it fires up and runs for a second or 2, then it's a lack of fuel issue.

My dodge stratus wont start it will turn over but wont start

Listen for the fuel pump when you first turn on the key to the run position. If you hear it then spray a small amount of starting fluid in air intake while someone tries to start it if the engine fires then most likely a Crank Position Sensor. The CPS controls your injectors.

99 ram with 5.2 wont start, good fuel pressure on rail, good spark. no engine codes any ideas

You have fuel pressure but is the fuel being injected? Do this, get a can of spray starting fluid from the parts store or a hardware store, spray into the engine air intake, if the truck starts and then stalls out you have no fuel being injected. Also make sure when the engine is cranked that the engine computer (ECM) is getting power, you could have a problem with the starter motor switch, this is the electrical switch the ignition key actuates.

1996 nissan quest will not turn over it wants to start but wont does this mean the timing belt is broke?

Hello. Not necessarily. There are many possible causes of it not starting. Begin by changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't help, change the air filter. Finally try some starter fluid sprayed into the air intake when the cover is off of the air filter.

I have a 96 dodge stratus the wont start trys to turn over but wont start, changed plugs, fuel pump, and fuel injector and the fuel regulator sensor. any ideas on what is wrong with it?

Have you tried spraying starter fluid in the air intake and cranking it? If it starts for a few seconds at least you know that it is a fuel problem and not electrical. You could also check each of the plugs for spark but I prefer the first method. Good luck!

After car is warm it rev's high like it is not shifting in to next gear is that a transmission issue

Could be a vaccum leak or Intake manifold leak. If you spray brake clean around the intake manifold and the idle returns to normal you have found the leak. Do not use water as this could hydrolock the engine causing further damage.

I dont know too much about cars but i have a 97 dodge intrepid and i have been trying to get it to start it use to run really well now i have tried to crack it and i get nothing out of it the radio turns...

If you have a spark tester, plug it into a spark plug then place the spark plug wire on the other end. Have someone to turn the engine over while you watch for spark. If you have spark, now you can make another test. Spray some ether into the air intake or throttle body, you might have to take the air intake line going to the throttle body off to gain access to the throttle body, but after spraying the ether into the intake, try to start it...if it attempts to start, your problem is fuel related, you stated that you didn't have much knowledge about cars, so at this point you will need to decide whether you want us to try to talk you through it or, get a qualified mechanic to work on it for you.
