Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

When I try to start my Intrepid, it turns but wont turn over. If you spray starting fluid in the intake, it will turn over, and then die when the fluid runs out. If you pump the gas while starting it, after spraying starting fluid, it will run, but you have to keep pumping the gas to keep it running. After you get it running, and pump a while, it will eventually even out, and idle, but if you stop pumping too soon, it will die. Once it will idle, if you shift into gear, it will rev down, and almost always die. I have checked all of the spark plugs, and wires, and there is spark in both. I recently put in a new fuel pump and have changed the filter. Any ideas? Maybe the regulator?

well you narrowed it down to a fuel problem. not sure about your model, but most cars have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to reduce un needed pressures. that could possibly be bad. its cylinder in shape and has a vacuum hose connected to it. check the hose and that unit.

2000 dodge intrepid wont stay running

Have fuel pressure tested in both situations. I've seen fuel pumps quit once they get heated up, then when they cool, pump again. Perhaps try WD40 sprayed in to throttle body inlet when no start, and that will tell you if it's a fuel delivery problem. Just remove air cleaner intake hose at front of throttle body, and open throttle and spray for a second or 2 then try to start. If it fires up and runs for a second or 2, then it's a lack of fuel issue.

93 toyota pickup 4x4 it will stay running after I turn it on to start it up, it starts up then after a few seconds it kills

if I'm reading this right...
... the engine starts and dies within a few seconds.
... you jumpered the fuel pump test connector and it will keep running.
... you smell fuel after trying to re-start when it dies.

Disconnect the plug to the cold start injector. Even if you have an issue with the engine running then dying after a few seconds after doing this, if you don't smell fuel after disconnecting the cold start injector and try to restart it, the cold start time injector time switch may be failing.

Buy a can of starting fluid and have someone start the engine then spray short bursts of the fluid around all the intake fittings. If spraying the fluid in any particular area keeps the engine running, I'd start looking for leaks around that area.

It does sound like an AFM or COR issue considering it dies after a few seconds, but the fuel smell when trying to restart the engine may be a separate issue that needs corrected / isolated first.it will keep running.

My 93 pontiac bonneville will start sometimes and wont most of the time

Next time it does this have can of starting fluid handy, spray it into the air intake hose and see if it starts, if it does and dies out the fuel pump is defective.

My car won't start. The engine will crank and try to start but will then sputter out and die.

Try to check for gas and spark.

Check for gas flow by adding starting fluid to the intake or the throttle body. If the car starts and then stops, then there is a fuel delivery problem.
If the car doesn't start with starting fluid sprayed into the intake, then you may have an ignition problem where there isn't spark.

It could be a bad crankshaft position sensor circuit, in that case, as an example.
Or, it could be valve timing that has skipped on the chain.

Good luck on this repair.

Won't start. turning, but won't fire.

If you think its fuel, spray some starter fluid inthe throttle body. If it fires up, you have a fuel problem, otherwise, check your spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Also, check your fuses.

If you have a spark tester, plug it into a spark plug then place the spark plug wire on the other end. Have someone to turn the engine over while you watch for spark. If you have spark, now you can make another test. Spray some ether into the air intake or throttle body, you might have to take the air intake line going to the throttle body off to gain access to the throttle body, but after spraying the ether into the intake, try to start it...if it attempts to start, your problem is fuel related, you stated that you didn't have much knowledge about cars, so at this point you will need to decide whether you want us to try to talk you through it or, get a qualified mechanic to work on it for you.
