What year is the car? If 2011 or later you have a GDI engine. Beautiful new engine design with a very high pressure fuel pump to boost the injectors to about 1600 psi of fuel pressure. Sits right under the main plastic engine cover. Should be a very audible clacking sound when cold starting that reduces to a clicking sound fully warm.

Entirely normal.

Enjoy the nearly 40 mpg (thanks to that GDI motor), and be sure to say YES when your dealer recommends a fuel induction service every 30,000 miles. BTW.. don\'t blame them, blame the EPA for having crazy emission standards for cars when a diesel truck can spew black sooty smoke into the air enough to choke you, and nothing is done. GDI is great, but prone to carbon buildup by design, and this condition is increased 10 fold by the ethanol in modern gasoline.

Audi a4 1998 tapping noise only when idles under valve cover

Sounds like a bad valve lifter or a valve out of adjustment. It's probably a bad hydraulic valve lifter. In idle, when the oil pressure is lowest, it is not filling with oil. When the motor revs up, oil pressure rises and fills the faulty lifter.
If you do have mechanical lifters, the valve is probably out of adjustment. If you do car work, pull the valve cover and see if it's adjustable. Of course, you'll need the specs from VW/Audi.
Otherwise, it's probably a shop job.
Sorry.

Clanging noise while running

A rhythmic metal on metal noise in an engine usually follows a classic rule: valves tap and pistons knock. If the noise is rhythmic with the speed of the engine and incrementally increases when the engine speeds up, then it is one of these two issues. All you need to answer in this case is whether your noise is a tap or a knock. On the other hand, if the clanging sounds more like an old diesel engine and increases in volume when the engine accelerates, then the problem is pre-ignition. If the problem is simply pre-ignition, then you will need to check your ignition system, including the knock sensor, crank sensor, and all your spark plugs and coils. This is the simplest thing to do first. Unplug each coil one at a time to verify that the engine loses power for each one. Valve tap can be caused by lifters or a broken valve spring. To diagnose this, you need to remove the valve cover and check the lifters. Are any loose when you try to move them up and down by hand? Engine knock signals that your engine needs to be rebuilt with new piston rods and bearings. It is not a good idea to drive very long with either condition or you could end up causing more damage and get stuck on the side of the road.

Metal tapping noise at idol. it goes away as soon as you give it gas,the car runs great. i need help finding the noise.

The tapping is most likely your lifters, These makes the noise when oil is broke down or low, Maybe even a weak oil oump, Usually it is still making the niose on accl. and covers up by engine noise. Good luck to ya.

Please check to see if the slapping noise is from the belts, the idler , the water pump or alternator. Also check if this is the tappets or the valves, if so this might require a check up after removing the valve door covers. Check for oil pump pressure and also for settings of the valves.

might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-0.jpg 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-2.jpg

Engine tapping.......

Tapping and oil burning when both are together are tappet trouble. Get another mecanic to check. Any other part of the engine tapping would get a lot louder after a lot less miles. Sounds like tappets and valve stem seals are worn hence tapping and oil burning.
