    not sure what sensor your pulling out here as remember their is a difference in the english and american terminology ,but if you refering to engine coolant temperature switch/sensor then replace it is your best bet as it could be defective causing you this problem

    Hi there;
    Thanks Alicantecoli, Yes I am referring to the ECT and I mean I just disconnect it before cranking the car. (It is like the value from the ECT = 0 as it is disconnected ) and in this case I can start the this engine . When it is connected the engine don't start at all until the battery dies. I ordered this ECT sensor since last october but the dealer nearby here which was in South Africa moved to Dubai and altough I paid the 50% of the price already I didn't receive it yet up to now.
    Thanks for your help

    hmmm try a auto factor whos local if not look on the internet ,these sensors are only about 8/12 euros here in spain

    Thanks, I will get one ECT sensor soon ... but meantime I have got also the engine light on... when I disconnect the ECT sensor the engine rev is about 700 rpm at the beginning and engine light is on, but once I reconnect the ECT sensor the engine take a high rev by itself (up to 1500 rpm) for a while (5 min or more sometimes) and during this period the engine light is off, then the engine rev drops again around 700 rpm and at that time the engine light is on again and stay there until you switch off the engine...I change the air filter, clean the MAF sensor, change the spark plug, but didn' t solve this. I don't have a code reader and bring the car to one repair shop. The guy there used his laptop to check any error code and it was his laptop who get burned by a short-circuit...Very frustrating!!!

    once you have a new sensor then disconnect the battery and jin the leads together for half hour and this may wipe the memory in the computer ,cannot be sure it will work as your kia has different software to a europeon version or an american version ,their is also asian software which is what i suspect you have ?¿?¿?¿? maybe any way best of british with it

  • ntsoaniri Jul 31, 2011

    Thanks again. I will try this and let you know once I get the sensor... in 2 weeks time probably...
    (By the way, yes it is 100% asian because It was introduced from Hong Kong as far as I know)

    I am back again here, I got the new sensor and have it fixed. I did not jin the leads as you mentioned, because I am afraid if it will create new trouble in the ECM... So I just replaced the old sensor with the new one. The engine starts now normally and the "check engine light" in the dashboard went off. Only the rev at idling is a bit higher (1000 rpm) in cold start but drop to 700 rpm after 15 to 20 min. (I hope it is normal)..;
    Thanks for your valuable help. (Is it necessary to jin the leads?)

    jin the leads ,yes sorry about this but iam writing so many answers in a short time i can miss letters out like ___the ----- i can write teh ,i need a nice secretary to answer the phone and extra services ?? well you know what they say here in spain the older the man gets the worse he becomes ,well this joining of the leads is only necessary for a difficult problem that is impossible to read with a code reader AND REMEMBER THAT IAM IN EUROPE ,so any vehicles here are a lot more difficult to diagnose as different software is used so this little trick can save you a trip to dealer who have the internet (coded) to factory to clear any faults and reset the service light .Well i have to get ready as a breakdown call out in murcia on the mar menor a rental car ,its like a month old so doubt if i sort it unless my automotive multimeter can show me anything on the quick .must fly

2016 kia sportage ,then the temp is in the teens, battery drains car will not start battery .

If you are making short trips, perhaps using power accessories, etc. Your battery will lose its reserves. You may want to put it on a charger once and a while. Also when a battery gets older it will start to die in cold weather. I expect about 7 or so years out of my batteries. As you say yours is less than a year there may be a charging problem.....get it checked if short trips and draining it with acc. is not happening.

Where is the ground wire in a 2007 Kia sportage lx

The main engine ground is found by tracing the negative battery cable to where it attaches to the engine. If the vehicle is not spinning over or does not even click when you try to start it, may be the starter is going bad. If all the dash lights come on when you turn the key then a ground is most likely good.

i would recommend performing or telling your tech to perform a parasidic drain test. because if your battery is dying after a day of no use it sounds like a control module is telling something to turn on when not suppose to and is draining the battery so you will not be able to start it.
hope this helps

My 1998 kia sportage does not start, something is draining the battery, had the alternator, started and battery tested, all good. So what's draining the battery!

The #1 most common cause is lights being left on or lights coming on at night when the temperature drops. Lighted visors are a common problem.

Hi there - I wonder if you can help us, with the heavey snow today our 2 year old Kia Sportage wont move at all. After not using it all day our battery seems to be dead. I would appreciate any help or...

An good battery is not going to die from 1 day of not being used. And one cold day is not going to kill it either. Something drained it, I think you need to charge the battery and take it somewhere and have someone figure out what is draining the battery while the ignition is OFF. this usually turns out to be an anti-theft circuit malfunction which keeps locking/unlocking the doors.

Hi i had a 1996 sportage AT,the problem with my sportage it wont start and the battery is always drained up specially when not in use.even witha new battery it wont start up

Have an alternator test performed to verify that the alternator is working adequately. If it's not charging the battery enough a drain will result.

If that's not the case, then a parasitic draw test will have to be performed to find out where the drain is coming from. Chances are something like the glove box light is remaining on, or you have a minor short causing the battery to drain. You can look up how to do this but it's a better idea to see the dealership as they have the Kia specific training to do this and will know the common problems to look for.

Good luck!

Starting problems Kia Sportage

Its too cold ... get a block heater. At least get an under hood heater, even an old electric blanket will work ... just don't forget to remove it before starting the engine.

You also might look into holding the preheaters on longer.

2000 KIA Sportage

Living in Thailand I had a lot of stalling problems. It started with my engine not running smooth when driving away cold. After half a km or so the car would just die or after even a longer distance stalling at full speed. Restarting worked and mostly I could drive on. Sometimes it would stall in a traffic jam.

Checked everything, but could not really put 1 and 1 together until I noticed that I was loosing a little cooling liquid and kept refilling on a regular basis. Found that every time this problem occurred also the cooling liquid was low again. Refilling the liquid solved the problem till the cooling liquid/water was low again. After fixing the actual leaking hose the problem disapeared totally. Later when my radiator started leaking slightly the problem came back as before. Now the car is fitted with a new radiator no problems like this anymore for more then 1 year.
I think the engine management system of the KIA is very sensitive for low water and maybe the temperature changes coming with it.

Maybe worth checking?
