Question about 1990 Mazda RX-7

1 Answer

Have a 1990 Mazda RX7 vert w/automatic tranny. The hold little is flashing always and won't go into overdrive. I press the hold button but nothing happens. It never has. When it wasn't on, I could engage it with the button. Everytime I turn off the car and start it back it; the hold is off but when the car goes from 2nd to 3rd; the hold lights begins to flash and won't go off. I thought I had a battery problem because my battery was low. Put new one in and nothing. Could I please get some help. Thanks.

The flashing signals just that the solenoid for the command of the overdrive is faulty and the TCM can't control it . On a car of this age that is something to be expected.
Take your car to a repair shop and get a full service and inspection on the tranny - that is the first fault from a long line of future faults. And you should start saving for a full refurbishment of the tranny, you will need a lot of money in the near future.

Actually the fix is quite quick, it's a 4 hour job replacing the solenoid. The problem is in the fact that this fault is an wear related one, more will follow and those will be costly. Getting a new tranny now will be cheaper in the end.
Yes, it will be cheaper - for start a manual tranny will cost a lot less. But you will lose some (not much, but you will feel it) of these savings for the modifications necessary to install it. But you will recoup those costs in fuel savings.

I would check the trany fluid level ASAP before the trany is no good and if the problem still persits try replaceing the output speed sensor. which should be on the trany with 2 or 3 wires.

Where is the overdrive selenoid

You either have a transmission problem, or a gearbox problem. It has nothing to do with an overdrive button. Overdrive buttons are used mainly for towing in automatic vehicles, increasing the torque and lowering the RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) on an engine.

I have a 1989 mazda rx7 convertible automatic with the 13b rotary engine and im going to swap the engine and tranny for the 13b turbo engine and manual tranny, and also have ecu.is it hard to swap and how.

its not hard at all. as long as your good with your hands. and know the basics of your rx7. other then that everything bolts in. you just need a turbo driveshaft for sure. or they sell a custom driveshaft on mazdatrix.com so you can keep your N/A differential.

My 1990 Town Car auto tranny slips in overdrive

There are both bands and clutches in your transmission and likely you have an internal pressure loss that is affecting overdrive. Repair cost i can't give you but being as old as it is likely you can get an identical vehicle for what it will cost to repair. You may be able to prolong the inevitable by using a conditioner such as lucas,(only one I've seen that actually does help in some cases) but it can't fix what is worn, so even if it works better, it will only be temporary. I know that isn't exactly what you wanted to hear but that's the way it is.

A green light flashes on & off on tachometer. it looks like this 0/0 off

I believe what you're looking at is O/D off . This is the overdrive / overdrive off indicator. There is a switch on the gear selector lever to turn the overdrive on or off to change this. Press the button if nothing happens there is no change and it is flashing that usually indicates an internal transmission problem, check the fluid. Adjust the level if needed and make sure it is not black/burnt. Check for shavings in the fluid. If your tranny starts acting funky, you'll know why.

YOU HAVE A AOD,NOT AN AODE. YOU'RE AOD HAS A MANUAL THROTTLE VALVE CABLE WITH MANUAL OVERDRIVE SELECTIVE BY LINKAGE. AODE HAS ELECTRONIC OVERDRIVE ACTIVATED BT A BUTTON AND MORE INTERNAL ELECTRONICS,THIS ONE WON'T WORK. TRY GETTING A REBUILD ON IT,MAY BE CHEAPER WITH A WARRANTY! 1994 toyota paseo: overdrive problem

I would start with replacing your tranny fluid. black is no good. your tranny should hold about 7 qts of fluid. The tranny fluid runs through your radiator to help keep it cool. If your thermostat is stuck closed your eng coolant won't circulate and the coolant will get hotter inside your radiator. thus making your tranny fluid hotter and breaking it down. After time it will turn black from getting too hot. Let your car warm up to normal operating temperture then grab your upper radiator hose. It should be very warm. If not your thermostat is stuck closed.
