This is likely caused by a faulty drive motor in the speedometer itself. Not uncommon with todays' electronic units. If there are no shifting issues with this car, start looking in local salvage yards to get a replacement. There may be places you can send it to, to have it rebuilt. This way you keep the original miles. Let me know if you need instructions on R&I.

would change the ECU with the chip from the key from a car in scrapyard ,but before you get carried away try another seperate earth on the back of the speedo printed circuit board ,i wouldnt mind betting this is your problem

1996 ford taurus odometer stopped working


the Speedo in your car is electronic, the problem is the tiny motor that moves the needle is most likely defective, there are no parts for the Speedo available to the consumer from Ford, you must remove the Speedo and have it repaired by a authorized Speedo repair shop. here is a link to a good one I know about.

Yes the electronic speedo itself has failed, the input they refer to is the vehicle speed sensor, the speedo can be repaired, send it to a authorized factory repair center, don't go through the dealer they send it out as well, and then 2X the repair bill to you.

if the speedo still works then it will need a spedo unit if the speedo doesn't work it is either the cable or the gear in the trans to check the cable unthread from trans and attach a drill to the cable innereds spin the drill if the speedo does not move replace the speedo cable
