It is the sending unit in the tank. This is a common problem for this truck.

Alot owners says its a common problem on the GM trucks that the fuel pump module goes bad. I had an erratic fuel gauge as well, and the fuel pump died. Bad news was, everything comes in one piece as a fuel pump module (pump, send unit, tank float) and its like $500 dealer cost. Good thing was, it fixed my pump problem and my fuel gauge problem. Here the procedure:

  1. Remove the sending unit.
  2. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  3. Remove the fuel lever sensor electrical connector retaining clip.
  4. Disconnect the fuel level sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the fuel level sensor retaining clip.
  6. Remove the fuel level sensor (1).

Fig. The fuel level sensor is part of the fuel pump assembly-typical

To install:

  1. Install the fuel level sensor (1).
  2. Install the fuel level sensor retaining clip.
  3. Connect the fuel level sensor electrical connector.
  4. Install the fuel lever sensor electrical connector retaining clip.
  5. Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  6. Install the sending unit.

I hope this helps to solve it. Good luck.

Does fuel pump have anything to do with fuel gauge

The fuel gauge sender unit and the fuel pump are two separate items but on many cars they share the same space and are integrated into the same housing or unit.

It is unlikely each will interfere or affect the operation of the other unless the unit has been carelessly repaired and refitted. The fuel gauge float arm is particularly vulnerable to damage.

After much use the rheostat track the float arm operates becomes worn and might provide intermittent gauge readings but the most common reason for this is poor electrical connections.

The 1991 Riviera and Reatta had power supply modules which we often had problems with at the dealership when they were still under warranty. Sometimes you could tap on them and make the problem come and go to diagnose.

Digital gas gauge reading incorrectly and inverted

sounds like a faulty sender unit or your just realy low on fuel before you spend any money on repairs try filling the tank up with fuel as if its been low for a long time the sender unit in the tank may be sticking the fuel will lube it and may start working again

if it worked for a short period of time after doing the pump/sending unit the check the connections going to the pump/sending unit they would have been moved around doing the pump

I just filled up my tank and now the light is on and the tank shows empty?

{: ) Your fuel level sensor could be intermittently reading high resistance and may need replacement. An intermittent reading can happen at any level (say 1/4, 1/2, 3/4) and will suddenly give you an empty reading and fuel light, sometimes an SES light may follow. At any rate, this kind of symptoms still recommends replacement of the fuel level sensor.
You can observe it by yourself. Does it read normal on lets say half full but will read empty when you can calculate that you still have 1/4 remaining on your tank. In your case you've just filled it full, and it's no different once the fuel level sensor start getting erratic readings.
Although it may take time, you can wait until the fuel level stabilizes to a certain lower level where you think your gauge was reading normally before. You can also do some stop and go, forward and reverse, to slosh the level arm to a a more readable position. Check if you can get clearer results out of this trick.
A scan tool is a better tool to determine quickly the condition of the sensor and may tell also if there are other codes that is related to your problem.

89 C4 911 gauges reading incorrectly?

These cars are funky and this is normal...gauges on all of the earlier cars are for general reference...checking the oil level manually while the car is running and warmed up is the most proper way to do this...generally speaking, your pressure should drop as the car warms up, but still reach 5 bar on full accelleration (928's have the same gauge). The oil level gauge will actually increase as the car warms up...the difference can be dramatic.
