Question about 2000 Mazda Protege

Help!! i have a 2000 mazda protege 1.8. the car was working great for years now when ever i press on the gas the car starts to **** when it hits around 20mph and it will not go any faster. it actually sounds like the more gas i give it the less power the engine has.what could be the problem?

How old is your battery? If I am having problems with starting, and my battery is getting close to 5 years, I automatically change it, as I want to have reliable starts. This usually fixes the majority of my problems. If it doesn't, I take it to the shop and have the starter checked.

2001 Mazda Protege 1.6L automatic. Knocking pinging noise
Solution 1 would be to diagnose the problem of the low comp in 2& 3 and solve that issue. I would of started w the timing belt 1st. If that didn't solve it,ck head gasket, valves,rings. CK for oil & coolant mixing. Good Luck

on the backside of the motor, towards the firewall. look above the drive shaft. it's about haft way up the motor.

Engine bogs and stalls
Check the air filter hose. My '99 Protege was idling rough and would sometimes shut off. The air filter hose was cracked half way around. I replaced it (easy just loosen two hose clamps and pull out the sensor) and the car is running fine.
